So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

i'm trying to figure out how to make this chord shape from the too much fill.
E:-8/9--
B:-8/9--
G:-8/9--
D:-7/8--
A:-8/9--
E:------
I watched the vid and saw you could use your ring finger to bar the bottom strings.. my problem is that my ring finger doesn't do the weird alien-like bend.. anytime i make chords such as:
E:-1--
B:-3--
G:-3--
D:-3--
A:-1--
E:----
i have to use my pinky finger... anybody got a good idea on how i should form the chord?

For the Too Much fill use your ring finger on the bottom three strings, your index on the D and your middle finger on the A

Thats how I do it, probably not how dave does it though.
E:-8/9-- -Ring
B:-8/9-- -Ring
G:-8/9-- -Ring
D:-7/8-- -Index
A:-8/9-- -Middle
E:------
It took me awhile for my fingers to be comfortable. I used to have the same exact problem when first starting to learn WWYS jam

You should just practice barring with your ring finger. Don't worry too much about getting the high e ringing just make sure you can get a comfortable bar and all the notes ringing clearly. It's really hard at first, just like anything worth learning.
Dave uses his pinky to bar these kind of chords and although it isn't "wrong" it will become limiting if you can only do it that way. Thats why I think it's rediculous when people want to play EXACTLY how Dave does it. Your just learning his idiosyncrasies and limiting your playing in the process.

wow, thanks for the help guys.. i guess i'll just have to mess around with it, but I've definately determined that I can't bar with my ring finger.. it just doesn't bend in the same manner my pinky does.. I think it's deformed

The universal solution to all guitar problems.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away
