verse is not in Am mattdog, its in G too (or Em)

i think it is definately G! all of it.
but i've heard some great solos that play using B Phrygian. (of course that's the same notes as G, just the focus is on B as the tonic)

and, i kick myself in the nuts...though i do solo to #41's verse in Am and it works very well

Am would work, but it would have to be dorian, thats why it still sounds okay
