You're most-likely trying to hit pitches that are out of your natural range, or "reaching" for notes. Most of the stuff I've read about singing advises that you never strain for these notes; that your throat should always be at about the same tension while your singing as if you were speaking.
I have a great book on this if you want the title.

Most likely because you're using your throat to sing instead of pushing the air out using your diaphram

Word to that brother , also drinking water can losen up your throat quite a bit , just don't drink things like coke , that will slime up your throatRanting Thespian wrote:For me, when I sing and my throat gets tight, it's either that my vocal chords are clogged, or that I didn't sing for quite some time, and needed to warm up.

I currently take voice and am in 2 acapella choirs. What works for me is 1. i always drink tea with honey. Also i have heard straight PURE lemon juice is good at loosening up the throat. The tension in your neck means u are trying to sing out of your range in what is known as full voice. You should aim to use whats known as your "head voice". This is when you really try to throw your voice out the top of your head. I know it sounds weird but thats the best way of explaining it. You get your vocal chords high in your throught and leave them there. Its not exactly a falsetto. Falsetto is kinda punched in tonal comparison. Head voice is more velvety and smooth...let me know if u need more help...contact me on aim Phan226

but like, i have a deep voice and it hurts when i sing anything and what i have been working on is nothing else matters by metallica, and hetfield sings low in that. i don't see how that's out of my range, but i don't even know what my range is

well...are there songs that you feel comfortable singing? if so list them... "nothing else matters" could be too low for you...try singing it first thing in the morning most people can achieve better tonal quality in the bottom section of their voice when it is rested. also...if you are singing very low your neck should feel tight. when you sing that low you should notice you adam's apple drop wayyyyyy down, that can cause a lot of tension in the neck muscles. Its kinda hard to fix and may mean that you dont have as bassy a voice as you may like.
