Question regarding Gravedigger

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Your right hand does not have to be stationary to palm mute. As others have said, its just a light contact as you come down on the string with the pick. Its not muting out the string totally, just deadening the tone a little.

If Dave is doing that sound/tone with a left hand mute...I would love to see how to do this. Maybe this is the perfect topic for the 1st installation in the DMB Guitar Classes Forum!!!!!!!
now that makes sense, i do that all the time too i just never considered it a "palm mute" so to speak

no one said as you come down on the strings with a pick besides Danny. When everyone was talking about palm muting while strumming i thought they were constantly muting the strings while strumming

I thought it was pretty clear, that's what I've been talking about this whole time, how Dave is able to strum freely just like he usually does, and yet make it sound "muted". I didn't mean choking out the sound, just muffling it.

It sounds like he palm mutes Too High, I haven't listened to it in a while but I'm pretty sure he does, atleast on the album.

Dave plays most of his songs kind of closer to the saddle, further away from the sound hole. Doing this kind of takes away the ringing of the note and just gives you the note plain and simple. But i think he lays his strumming hand down on the strings partially in a few songs.

the use of smilies on this board is hilarious.... i never get sick of it

i dont know about too high, the only ones that sound like it at all are gravedigger and some solo versions of the stone, specifically the KFOG video- i dont hink he does that when he plays with the band, it sounds cleaner.

The Dreaming Tree wrote:yea, not like electric guitar palm muting where you almost drone it out, but a light brush with the palm while you are strumming the opening chords.... either that or dave has a magic guitar setup.
That's the best decription that I've heard. I screwed around with the intro to that song for like three days. Lightly brushing my right hand against the strings was the way I got it to sound the most like the CD. It's not really muting it's just not letting the strings ring out as much as they normally would. Muffling would probably be a better word for this.
