you're starting to sound peculiarly defensive, and musically, johns guitar parts kill dave's guitar parts, dave's lucky enough to have a great backing band (sans boyd) to give them feet to stand on, you put dave and john next to each other solo and tell them to go off and do their best and john will smoke dave any day of the week

I'm fine, I'm enjoying myself as usual, but I'll let it go, there's no point in arguing this anymore, if people want to wear their rosy-colored glasses and think dave's the best, it's their gig...

yeah, it is very cool, it's an electric instrumental and he plays the rhythm part in addition to lead parts, very tight

I'd just like to say that this has been one of the most entertaining threads I've sit back and enjoyed in awhile. I expected to see a John Mayer vs. Dave Matthews (who's a better guitar player) thread here some time. And this probably won't be the last. and all in all, I think it went pretty well. I agree with gcom in that a lot of Dave's songs arn't that complex chordwhise, however, how he plays them takes Rhythm guitar to a new level. He can make 2,3 note chords sound bigger than J-Lo's ass. I learned some of John Mayers tunes, and they're so different than daves. I just think they kick each other's ass's in different respects.

peace,
Ken

they're always the most fun, the most fulfilling times I spend on any message board is arguing about mayer on a DMB board, it never ceases to entertain me

Well, I would like to say, I am very glad I started this topic. I have never laughed so hard in my life, I have not enjoyed reading a topic better then this one so far, props to the feud between gcom007 and DmbFanJason. :D I love to hear people speaking their mind on this subject. I must say though, I agree with gravedigger on this topic. I am a way bigger Dave fan then John Mayer fan, but I think they both have some things about them that are better then the other. I think they are both good song writers and both have a unique style of playing. I would love to see the two of them get together and jam sometime.

If your argument is so weak that you have to resort to namecalling, you're better off just not posting at all. Please grow up.

I'm not gonna lock this for now (maybe JKanter will, but I won't). If the tone of the thread doesn't improve though, it's not gonna last.

Jpittman is right. Let’s keep the posts clean, even though the unclean posts have been the funniest to read. :D I want to hear what everyone thinks on this matter and don’t want to see it locked.

Peace :D

Dave Matthews Rules
Also his band is way better then John Mayer’s Band, everyone has to agree on that one. 8)

Dave can write a song a hell of a lot better than Mayer can (and i'm not a Mayer basher, I love his stuff, hell I've seen him 3 times), and Dave's guitar playing can be complex and his strumming patterns can be insane at times (like The Stone, how does he just strum that when he's playing single notes? it boggles the mind), but John is a far superior guitar player. He has some of the fastest hands i've ever seen (next to Tim Reynolds, of course). He has some stretches that would make even Dave's hand cramp up. If you disagree with me on any of these, download Sucker, Neon, The Wind Cries Mary, or Man on the Side and try and tell me Dave is the better guitar player. They're both amazing guitarists, but it's obvious that Mayer spent more time on the guitar aspect instead of the lyrics. But he's still a young kid, give him time, and in some years his songs may be deeper than they are right now.

Just keep it clean.....I personally think John Mayer is a superior guitarist in terms of theory and everything.....Dave has an extremely unique style that he kind of coined. Dave started his style and developed his own although John uses more technical reasonings and stuff. 2 different....both absolutely amazing. Basically, think of Neon and plenty of other songs and also think of Best of What's Around, Rhyme Reason, What Would You Say. All amazing pieces but much different style guitar.

As for Lyrics.....Dave runs circles around John in terms of lyrics. I was having a conversation w/ someone the other day(AnandP I think) and we just basically said that Dave & John grew up in such different areas. Dave's lyrics have more substance to them. Think about John growing up in Georgia and going to Berklee School of Music. On the other hand, Dave grew up in the US, Britain, and freaking South Africa. He has had so much more life experience which is why he can write songs sucks as Cry Freedom, Seek Up, Typical Situations, #36, Dancing Nancies, Best of What's Around. Dave wrote all those while he was 23(right?)...
Dave Matthews wrote:"23 and so tired of life"
While this may not be of all stuff, Dave doesn't have too many of lyrics like this John wrote...
John Mayer wrote:"I want to run through the halls of my highschool"
Oh well...this has been too long of a post, that's my opinions...peace

you guys gotta take er easy....look at their ages...john is still trying to establish himself and develop his own sound...ive seen him live and thought his show was amazing...but i think the record co. has put a leash on him, and tries to market a john mayer that will make the young females scream and call up trl...once they get a clue and let him break off a lil somethin im sure all the critics will be sittin on their hands....

i think its nuts to even compare the two, what they both do is amazing.......but in all honesty do either of them hold a candle to what JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE is gonna do? hes gonna take the world by storm..(KIDDING....ONLY KIDDING....THAT WAS A JOKE...)
anyway, great topic to get some funny dialog goin on..
