well yea...like they were saying, i don't think he adds much to the band. i don't htink that the 5 of them need to add a piano. i think they do just fine the 5 of them, maybe timmy in there, or other guests like the flecktones, but a piano is just not really....well...appropriate? i dunno, can't find the word. i just don't think a piano is neccessary.

don't get me wrong though! he's obviously damn talented, he just doesn't fit.
i dont see what you have against the piano. honestly, i would've hated Central Park if it wasn't for him. he's the only reason i got that dvd. i would take his playing over boyd's or dave's any day
i have nothing against the piano. i actually wish i knew how to play it. but i just don't think its the right instrument for the band.

but boyd and dave?? come on...these guys are the band. maybe not so much boyd, but i mean dave obviously has to be there fatjack. but where would DMB be without that violin solo in LIOG or Crush? even if it is out of tune a little sometimes..... lol.

and you can't say that boyd isn't talented, he is damn talented. he hast o be to do stuff like that. my friends who play orchestra violin say that he has major skill too.

im not saying that dave and boyd are bad musicians, just that butch is more talented than both of them. dave has to be there, just not on guitar

The way i see it is that Butch is more of a member of the dmb "family" rather than the band. Its like the Band is the band and anyone who has played with them is part of the "family".

are you kidding me people. Did you here Carter's cheers. There were like none. And any musician with half a brain knows he is the leader of that band

This is a tough conversation. The dave matthews band to me has always been about the celebration of music. You have the guitar, bass, drums(and here is where it gets kooky), the violin, and the saxiphone. The band is built on diversity. The only thing is that they added butch, not started with butch. So ofcourse, to me, the piano sounds a bit different. Not out of place cause its just another diverse instrument, but kind of out of the norm. Personally, i think that butch adds to the touring/live seen of the band but not neccesarily on the albums. Now if they encorporate butch into the new cd and mention him as a band member then, in my opinion he is in. He'll never be part of "The Dave Matthews Band" but he will in a way(family).
Honestly, i don't find the piano to be a "meshing" type of instrument with the rest of "the band"(my opinion).

i still haven't heard a decent reason for the piano to be so out of place in the band. everyone has just said "i don't think it fits." why? if you say you like the stuff he adds what's wrong with him being in the band.

the only reason i can guess is because it disrupts everyone's fanboy enduced perception of the band. as if though you are taking on an elitist view by thinking "it can only be original members." if he contributes well like everyone has said, then what the heck is the problem?

that's just the thing....the reason i don't think he fits well is because i don't like the sound he contributes. this is just my opinion though fatjack..yours is obviously quite different, and i'm fine with that. just voicing my own.

that was a damn good point fatjack.

i like the way butch fits in.... if you listen to really old dmb shows youll hear peter griesar (i think) on keys for a lot of the shows and it sounds terrible. It was pushed way too much to the front of the sound, if you knwo what i mean. Some ants marching performances from 92 or 93 are a joke, they sound like a parody of the modern day ones on a casio keyboard.... butch, though, has a lot more sophistocation to his playing and he keeps it toned down for the most part.... I like the way that he comes out and shows his stuff more in the long jam songs like two step, or during rapunzel- very jam-band-esque and i think it adds even more depth to their sound... did he play with them on BTCS? seems like everyone else did
