Do you put your guitar in its case every night?
I remember a couple years back when I got my first guitar, the guy told me to put the guitar in its case every night. Is this standard practice? I mean I still do 95% of the time, but I just want to know if its really necesary. I do understand if you leave it out for a very extended period of time, it will become warped.
Thoughts?

Ive had my guitar for about 4 years and Ive never put it in the case at night. But I could imagine it warping over time.
a little story...
When I worked at a local guitar store, This one guy came in with two buetiful old guitars that he inherited from his grandpa. A 1950's martin 12 string and a 40's gibson J style guitar, but they were both ruined because he left them in his attic without a case next to a window. But they were still prolly worth something-

you mean sudden change in temperature???6_strings_for_life wrote:hmm wow... I own 5 guitars and I have all of them out all the time. Now they are all in guirar stands(like those ones that can hold 3 guitars) but I cant see how they would become warped, unless there is a constant change in temperature.... interesting.......

Yeah I always wondered about this. I just recently started leaving my guitar out on a stand. I like it being out that way cause I am more apt to pick it up and start playing. I used to always keep it in the case but have been getting away from that.
Pluse I like having it out on a stand cause it is nice to look at.

Yeah humidity and temp changes are the most important factors plus you never know as somedevil said. what if you're walking knock it over the neck breaks how would you feel? but don't worry if you have it on a stand in a room that is not humid and has a constant temp thatn its cool

thats kindof reduculious to put it in the case whenever youre not playing it
i only use a case when i take them somewhere
yea speeny, constant humidity change would screw it up too
fluxuating (sp??) wouild have been a better word
so as long as the humidity is fairly consistant, i should be fine, at least it has been for me

I think it probably depends on where you live. I live in Chicago and in only 2 very cold and dry months last year, I screwed up the neck on my guild acoustic leavin it out. $50 to fix was a cheap lesson learned. I thought I would not play as much if it was not out, but that was not the case. I do miss it not making the room look so nice.
Anyway, for anyone living up north, keep the guitar in the case and with a humidifier inside it as well. Humidifiers are only about $10.

I dont mean to be a dick but it all depends on how nice of an axe you have. Like my Taylor 414rce is what I consider to be a gorgeous guitar, and that said I keep it in its case....if you have an all real wood guitar do yourself and keep it in the case, but if you dont feel free to keep it out. I know I left mine in the case, but the case open and the axe propped up and 3 months of that were enuogh to cause it to dry out a little bit. I now keep a humidifier in it at all times Im not playing, and its also in the case when Im not jammin. Humidity pays alot of importance in it too. It has to be pretty much at an exact 15% range of humidity for it not to damage it, although temperature isnt much of a factor
