an alternate look at a Proudest Monkey tab

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

an alternate look at a Proudest Monkey tab

Unread post by gcom007 » Mon Nov 11, 2002 9:29 pm

I was talking earlier of messing around with some of the tunes in order to give them a little more life solo, and while this isn't what Dave plays at all, I think it sounds much better and more diverse and it allows you to expand on already well known patterns, so let me know what you think!

Copy and paste to notepad so it lines up...

Capo at F (1st fret) and fingerpicked, everything is relative to the capo

some things to tinker with...

Code: Select all

f-----------------|----------------------------3--------|
C------0---3---1--|--------0h3----3p0------0h1----------|
G#-----2---0---0--|----0h2--------------0------------0--|
D#-----0---4---2--|-------------------4----------0h2----|
Bb-------5---3----|-------------5----------3------------|
F----3------------|--3----------------------------------|

a nice sus chord progression...

f----------2--------------------0h2---3----5s7-------------------------|
C-----0----5----3p1---------1h3-------3----3---7-8/10--8----10p8-------|
G#----2----2--------0-----0-----------0----2-----------9---------9-----|
D#----0--0------------0h2----------------0-------------10----------10--|
Bb------------3--------------------------------------------------------|
F---3-------------------------------3------------------8--8------------|

another progression...

f-------------3-3--2-2--3------7----8--8--|
C---3-3--7-7--3----3----3------7----8--8--|
G#--0----0----0----0----0------7----9--9--|
D#--5----4--------------------------------|
Bb-------5----3----3-------3/5------------|
F---3-------------------3---------8----8--|

and another based on the progression Dave plays...

f---------------------------|--------------------------|
C---------------------------|--------------------------|
G#--------------------------|----------4----5p4--------|
D#--------5-7b8bp5---5---5--|----5---5----------5---5--|
Bb----5/7----------7---3----|------5------3-------3----|
F---3-----------------------|--3-----------------------|

something that may be tricky but can be real cool...

continually play the 1, 5, 4 pattern...

f-------------|
C-------------|
G#------------|
D#-----0~-----|
Bb--------3~--|
F---3~--------|

then add lead like melodies based on
some patterns I'll lay out and whatever
scale runs you can conjure on your own
based on the Ab major scale...

f------------|------------|-----------------|
C---0--------|--3-1v-3-0--|--0-0-----0-0----|
G#----2-2-0--|------------|------0-2-----0--|
D#-----------|------------|-----------------|
Bb-----------|------------|-----------------|
F------------|------------|-----------------|

f------------------|----3-5-3--|
C---0h1p0h1p0------|--3--------|
G#------------2-0--|-----------|
D#-----------------|-----------|
Bb-----------------|-----------|
F------------------|-----------|

Ab major scale...

1st position

f---------------------------0-2-3---3-2-0--------------------------|
C---------------------0-1-3---------------3-1-0--------------------|
G#----------------0-2---------------------------2-0----------------|
D#----------0-2-4-----------------------------------4-2-0----------|
Bb----0-2-3-----------------------------------------------3-2-0----|
F---3-----------------------------------------------------------3--|

2nd positon

f-----------------------------2-3---3-2----------------------------|
C-------------------------3-5-----------5-3------------------------|
G#------------------2-4-5-------------------5-4-2------------------|
D#------------2-4-5-------------------------------5-4-2------------|
Bb------2-3-5-------------------------------------------5-3-2------|
F---3-5-------------------------------------------------------5-3--|

3rd position

f---------------------------------5-7-8---8-7-5--------------------------------|
C---------------------------5-7-8---------------8-7-5--------------------------|
G#--------------------4-5-7---------------------------7-5-4--------------------|
D#--------------4-5-7---------------------------------------7-5-4--------------|
Bb--------3-5-7---------------------------------------------------7-5-3--------|
F---3-5-7---------------------------------------------------------------7-5-3--|

so that's just some randomness to add a spark to the dusty riff to Proudest Monkey...
I'll add to it as time goes on, this is just early rought stuff, comments welcome!

holy shit.

how the hell did you come up with that and tab it out so quick? I'm printing it out now and I'm gonna git a whirl, see if I can do anything with it. I'm impressed just by looking at it.

I just doodled with some of those riffs. I like this one:

Code: Select all

f----------2--------------------0h2---3----5s7-------------------------|
C-----0----5----3p1---------1h3-------3----3---7-8/10--8----10p8-------|
G#----2----2--------0-----0-----------0----2-----------9---------9-----|
D#----0--0------------0h2----------------0-------------10----------10--|
Bb------------3--------------------------------------------------------|
F---3-------------------------------3------------------8--8------------|
I suck at lead, but that shit would be good practice. - the scales and stuff.

the scale patterns go anywhere too, you can just switch where they start to change the key

ha!

I remember. I told you to spruce it up since the riff is so boring, and you did it in like a half hour. I wish I could come up with shit that fast. I printed it out and actually went through it all and practiced the scales for awhile.
