Shopping for an electric guitar

Unread post by bassman462 » Tue Jun 02, 2009 11:04 pm

I'm thinking about getting an electric guitar with some graduation money, I'm going to go to guitar center tomorrow after school and check out these guitars, but I wanted to know if anyone has any good experience with these guitars to tell me what they think personally after extended use.

I play mostly rhythm style guitar, I'm going with hollow body because I'm so use to acoustic that I decided a long time ago if I got electric it'd be something with a big body. I am just barely learning how to play lead a little better, but I'm not a shredder or anything like that, I also enjoy playing jazz style stuff.

Random movie quote to make you seem hip and "with it": As long as there's, you know, sex and drugs, I can do without the rock and roll.

I would not just get a big bodied guitar because you are used to acoustic. They are distinct tonal differences that you need to consider. Hollow bodies in general have a mellower tone and are more prone to feed back (this can be a good thing depending on your preferences). Solid body guitars are much less prone to feed back and generally have a sharper more cutting tone. Now any of this can be adjusted depending on what pickups and amps you use but I'm assuming you are going stock.

I have only played the first guitar. I liked it but it feels a little cheap in my hands. I don't know why. They sound great though.

One guitar that you might consider which is similiar in style to the ones above is the Gretch Pro Jet. Such a great guitar:

Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

Yeah I know there's a tone difference, I like the uniqueness about hollow bodied guitar's sound. I didn't know about the feedback thing though, so thanks. I played some guitars at guitar center yesterday, the dot being by far my favorite, if I end up getting one I will probably get that one, though I will look at the gretsch as well.
