Matthews also roasts most of his conclusions with hot rusted electric guitars, played by himself and his longtime collaborator Tim Reynolds. It is a new wrinkle for a DMB studio album, and one too long in coming. The group's first big records, such as 1996's Crash and 1998's Before These Crowded Streets, were never as compelling to me as the live shows — particularly the spiraling sax-and-violin ascents propelled by Beauford and Lessard's fusion of funk and African rhythms — mostly because of the airy center left by Matthews' acoustic rhythm guitar.
As if RS could have reached lower levels of credibility.

I'm really excited to buy this next week.

I might preorder the CD/DVD T-shirt bundle for $35. No bonus tracks though, but I'm assuming someone will be able to provide those.

Do I want vinyl? I don't have a record player.

What kind of a question is that? If you don't have a player why the hell would you want it?

Well, I think record players are still attainable in some countries.

Plus, I have Mantis on vinyl.

Record players are very attainable, for fairly cheap actually. Sell them for about $40 where I work.

Remember that you still also need a phono amp or a receiver with one built in. If you buy used, there's a good chance you'll need a new belt (if the table is belt-driven), cartridge or needle.

And use the cueing device.

Lying In The Hands of God is by far my favorite song off this album

Same here. I like Why I Am, Squirm and My Baby Blue as well but to a much lesser extent. The rest sucks.

Yeah, it's head and shoulders above the rest. All the ballads are better than the more rocking songs, though, I think. I like FTWII, Dive In, Time Bomb, My Baby Blue and You & Me, too. I'm undecided on Squirm. Not nearly as good as some people were saying, imo, and definitely not BTCS quality. SMLAM is good enough but most of the lyrics are garbage. Alligator Pie had potential but they dropped the ball. Spaceman is completely forgettable, and Why I Am and Seven are utter failures.

God damn I hear a lot of guitar in this.

The true genius of Steve Lillywhite was turning Dave the fuck down! I find myself less inclined to blame Ballard, Batson, or Cavallo for the bad records. I think they were brought in to be whipping boys and allow Dave to make the guitar rock he wanted to do.

That being said, i find myself liking Big Whiskey...go figure.

I don't think Dave is pushing his guitar to be louder. The problem with the new records being worse is the fact that Dave isn't doing 98-100% of the song writing. Everyone else is putting in their two cents. The other members are fine musicians, but terrible song writers.

this album isn't doing much for me right now. i fucking hate dave on electric (with a few older exceptions). lying in the hands of god is my favorite right now. the beginning of my baby blue sounds like sister..actually the whole song kind of does. the melody, dave's voice, etc.

what happened to pre-stand up DMB? you know, catchy acoustic riffs falling off into drum and sax jams with lyrics just as surprising? i haven't been in love with any of their albums in years

does anyone else feel like some of these lyrics sound so elementary/radio-friendly/cliche?

All I know is that his guitar is mostly inaudible on everything prior to everyday. Mostly you hear Tim's flourishes and occasionally an opening riff from Dave.
