truss rod adjustment

Unread post by gravesRR7 » Tue Feb 10, 2004 4:17 pm

just changed the strings on my guitar and its buzzing horribly. i did a search and a bunch of people talked about doing a truss rod adjustment. how do you do that?
is it just cranking the bolt in the neck inside the body of the guitar a few times?

I personally would never do that to my guitar. Well actually I would but my guitar is a piece of crap! Anywho, it's a pretty fragile procedure from what I've heard.

Dude. If you don't know what you're doing, then I'd stay the heck away from your truss rod. cranking the bolts "a few times" could seriously break your guitar neck. I'd say, take it to a pro. It might not even be the truss rod. The most one should ever turn a truss rod is like 1/4 of a turn before they try to adjust it again. Otherwise, you can bend the crap out of your guitar neck. Just get it setup at a shop. If you've never had it done, it'll be good for your guitar. And it's pretty cheap.

I had the same thing happen, buzzing at the fourth fret. I took it to the guy at our local music store. He looked at it, turned the rod about a quarter of a turn and that was it. He didn't charge me a cent. But I definately wouldn't try to do the adjustment yourself unless you know what you are doing. A few years ago I watched a guy do a "simple" adjustment on a strat neck and split the sucker like a piece of firewood. It stays with you, believe me!

mine too. they told me to humidify it, i've been humidifying it for wong time, about 3 months. and it's now worse. i hope i didn't make a "wet" guitar. but i'm taking it in hopefully today. good luckwith yours too.

you know what really bites my balls though, there is a very big open mic night here soon, and MY picture is up on the school calander to promote the even, its from last one, and if my guitar isn't fixed i can't play.

i took mine in today, and they partially fixed it.
they actually loosened my trus rod, a very little bit, and that helped some. but they guy there said that this is one of the worst winters he's seen for dry guitars. my guitar is still drastically dry, even though i've been humidifying it for a month. i need to humidify it a lot more he said.
it turns out that i wasn't wetting the sponge enough. dont' wet the sponge to where its dripping, but get it substantially moist.
if you're not humidifying you guitar DO IT NOW.

other than that, you may need to crank the rod a little bit, but i'd leave that too the professionals.
