Help with Pay for what you get

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Help with Pay for what you get

Unread post by themaker » Sun Feb 08, 2004 6:08 pm

ya so i was wondering if anyone could describe how dave plays the intro part, specially with the slide part. The official tabs here says that you only use your thumb for the whole song. I find it very difficult to do so. I can only play it using my thumb, index, and middle finger (striking three strings at the same time). any suggestions will be of great help...... thanks :)

Well do you need help with the slide, or just how to play using your thumb? As far as the thumb, just strum all the strings with it

I don't even go by that tab on this site. I have never heard or seen a version of PFWYG where Dave uses his thumb or plays three notes in the intro.

You dont necessarily have to play with your thumb, cuz Im sure he uses a pick sometimes, but youve never heard that intro? He plays it all the time.

For the slide I use my index, middle, and ring fingers to pick all three at once, but then I just use my thumb for the rest...

the way it's worded is a bit tricky, it doesn't say that dave plays the song with just his thumb, it says that he plays the whole song with the thum accenting the bass notes. he uses the thumb, index and middle finger i believe. the thumb is just on the bass note.

graves has it right...but I, to this day, still disagree with the "three-note" intro...although, I have never seen a video of the intro. Go listen to a version where it's the band playing P4WYG live as opposed to D&T and you'll only hear the the "G" and "B" strings being played. The high E is something that Timmy plays and gets confused with what Dave is playing.

i am no expert on how dave plays this song, but i was pretty close to him in boston when he played this with Tim in december, and i'm almost positive that he used 3 fingers.
not to say you're wrong Jason, but i'm just saying what i saw him do on that particular performance. but as you said, "as opposed to D&T" and i saw D&T
