best ways to get better

Unread post by Pickles » Fri Jan 31, 2003 4:57 pm

when i first decided to play guitar i decided i would play dave for the most part. i started out on a 12 string so that couldve helped a little bit. i can play some of daves songs (ants, osw, crash, wwys (for the most part), and some others), but ive never had any lessons. ive been playing for about 8 months, and i really dont have any ideas on how to get better. i practice probably 2 or 3 hours a day and im often around people who also play guitar. if you have any ideas on how i could get better at anything (solos, fingerpicking, etc..) please reply. thanks

metallica isnt very hard
you dont have to play hammets solos
hetfields rythms arent very difficult
i learned some metallica and also some slayer(for speed)
mostly black sabbath and ozzy
learned some of zakk wylde's solos and stuff

i hate metal too but it does help in the long run

for blues (i love blues)
try eric clapton, b.b. king, and stevie ray vaughn

i also recommend allman brothers (my 2nd fave band) for a little southern influence

Dude...

If you've never heard of the Allman Brothers.... man how old are you? Yeah I suggest sooner rather than later too. If you like good music, you have to know who they are. Kinda like if you like baseball, you probably know who Willie Mays is.

Play in a band!!! I learned so much by playing with a drummer or
another guitarist. Learn to sing and sing alot, singing kinda cues most of the band. listen to all kinds of different styles of music. I personally suggest listening to folk music and blues(jazz is good, but it kinda hard and gets a little too confusing). Also listen to the melody in songs. Buy/download just about anything from the beatles and you will have a great song with a great melody. Play out in public also! a local coffeeshop or something, you can learn alot by playing a gig.
