Grey Street on 12-string

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

About the whole string argument as to whether or not having them all off the neck is bad for them, that's really no more than a myth. Here's a quote from a great site (frets.com) all about guitars, maintaining them, and lutherie.

"Is it really bad for my guitar to take all the strings off at once when changing them; should I do it one string at a time as some makers recommend?

It's definitely OK to take off all the strings on any fretted instrument. It's just an old husband's tale that taking off all the strings will injure the neck or any other part of the instrument. By the way, there's no harm in changing them one a time if that's more convenient for you.

Many necks have an internal truss rod which can have quite a bit of tension applied by tightening the nut. Probably the thought of this internal tension makes some people presume that without the strings pulling on the neck that it will be "sprung" backward somehow. Rest assured that your instrument would "rather" have no strings at all! Collectors and others who put their instruments into storage usually either remove the strings or detune completely.

Some instruments, such as banjos, mandolins and arch top guitars, have movable bridges which simply fall off when all the strings are removed. For those instruments, it's generally a bit easier to change the strings one at a time. That's why I change strings one at a time on my mandolin, but all at once on my guitar."

KevinGTArch wrote:While I don't doubt the plausability of your photo experiment, there are three little bits of evidence that go against this being the case for the "photo-in-question" of Dave's 12-string:

1. First of all you said you had to hit the low E "fairly hard" in order to make it vibrate so much that it would appear as two on film. Now thing about what song Dave is playing - Spoon. The song really doesn't require the power you would need to get that kind of vibration.

2. Look at the Dave picture again - there is clearly a difference in the guage between the the low E string and its octave. I can also see the other octave strings for the bass notes but its difficult to see the the B and high E or their double string at all.

3. You can also see that there are two rows of bridge pins. That really doesn't come on your standard 6-string guitar.

I have to hand it to you - that's one hell of a photo experiment to support an argument.

Peace,

Kev
it truly is a regular 12-string with all 12 strings on it, that he plays on Storytellers. He plays JTR with it on that show too. he talks about the 12 string in between songs at some point. its the 3-24-99 show on here:

I believe the show is 3-24-1999, not 2002

I just can't believe the hype over this debate. I can't believe it because there is absolutely no question that all 12 strings are there. Sorry, I get frustrated with stuff like this
I can't believe that we would lie in our graves wondering if we had spent our living days well, and I can't believe that we would lie in our graves dreaming of things that we might have been...

I know! That's what I've been trying to say since my original post on this thread like a week ago!

i'm a little late here, but it's obvious. Don't look at the soundhole, look at the bridge. It's pretty obvious if you look hard enough that the EGDA strings are all doubled up. The eB strings are too hard to see....

I have an idea...Everyone who KNOWS that all 12 strings are there, boycott this thread and never reply to it anymore! Don't give anyone the satisfaction of starting an argument!!!

The actual music video is on KaZaA. You can view it too on the DMB site.

IT is 100% 12 string on spoon... download the Storytellers...there is dave speak before jimi thing talking about getting his 12 stringer ready for spoon...like 100 times he says it...download it or contact me for the proof...but it is 100% no questions asked 12 string...this should end the debate...
Not to say everytime hes ever played it was on a twelve string.

yeah, just listened to spoon, and there's no possible way to get that sound without a 12-string. a normal 6-string cannot make that sound at all, there is the presence of the doulbed strings. and in the question answer he said behind the mic "i think ill play that 12-string over there....yeah ill play jimi thing then spoon...ill use the 12-string in a little while..."
