Raised B trouble
so ive tuned my Yamaha to raised B like 3 times already, and it worked fine and i had no problems, but that was like 5-6 months ago. but i just tried to do it again and i couldnt get the G string tuned to an A. i had it at A but it seemed much to low and the string was way too loose and it did not sound right at all. but when i tried to get it to a higher pitch A i was almost there but the string broke (i swear thats never happenned to me before). so im really confused. i read on antsmarching.org that daves gauge for the G string is .18, but the lightest i can find is .23. i think im going crazy. has anyone else had this same problem?

just use a capo. i know its cool to be like dave and have a separate guitar but its not even worth it

Re: Raised B trouble
personally i dont like using a capo, it sounds dull and its just too tight and uncomfortable that far up on the neck. plus having an extra guitar just for raised b is way cooler
Re: Raised B trouble
Have you tried using Extra Light strings, that's always what I've used. If that doesn't work, you could have just gotten a bad set of strings. Just because they're new doesn't mean the won't bust on you right off the bat.
I do agree with baseballjon9, though. It does sound better when you've actually got a guitar tuned up to it, as opposed to just using a capo; it sounds fuller. While I rarely put a guitar in Raised B anymore, mostly because its more convenient when I do shows to just have one, I still like the idea.
Plus, if you've got a spare guitar, why not, right?

Re: Raised B trouble
ya i use daddario extra lights...off the top of my head i think they r EJ15? they have worked fine before but for some reason this time i couldnt get the G string tuned to an A. ya i read that faq page and it says he uses elixir extra lights cuz the gauges r about the same, but the EJ15 gauges r exactly the same and they r only $6. all the strings work fine except for that G string. i havent had a problem with it before, thats y its so annoying. maybe my shitty tuner is even shittier than i thought it was.

i used martin extra lights... just did it... and threw an extra .016 B up top and it sounds great... so much better than a capo on my seagull, and this is only on a $75 GUITAR

Re: Raised B trouble
i have a yamaha that i dont use so i figured i'd leave it in raised B for a month at a time until i feel that i dont want it in raised b anymore for some reason. the G string is the only thing i have a problem with (thats wat she said?)

Re: Raised B trouble
nah ... it just sounds too thin when capoed because the strings dont get to vibrate as much....
