Yeah like others said a D-35 or HD-35 is the way to go.

Re: Best Martin under $3500
both of those guitars so sexy... wow i want one so bad. i've played one or the other enough at my local shop that you think they'd make me buy it already for wearing out the strings/scratches on pickguard
edit: i don't know about this cutting corners stuff, but the larrivee people on here swear by their guitars and their guitars only so... something to consider when taking their advice
anyway, it's always good practice to carefully look at the guitar you are buying and play it a lot and give it more or less a stress test. If you run into one of these supposed "problems", let the dealer know and they will pull out another one from the back. then of course rinse and repeat with the new one they give you...
and if something happens to the guitar after buying it, say the bridge comes unglued or something, i'm almost 100% sure martin has a warranty for defective parts where they will replace it or get you a new guitar or something similar.

Re: Best Martin under $3500
ya i would love a D-35...and if they've been "cutting corners" lately how would i go about getting an older one? like maybe late 90's early 2000's? would i have to buy a used one from a person or do some guitar stores sell older ones? the thing is im also a student still and only work during the summer, so spending $2200 on a guitar after only playing for going on two years now is hard to explain to myself. but honestly after playing one its all ive been thinking about for like a month
Re: Best Martin under $3500
Wait. Get yourself a nice midrange guitar that will last you, then when you're really serious, invest the money. Check out Alvarez and Larrivee. That's just what I'd do anyway.baseballjon9 wrote:ya i would love a D-35...and if they've been "cutting corners" lately how would i go about getting an older one? like maybe late 90's early 2000's? would i have to buy a used one from a person or do some guitar stores sell older ones? the thing is im also a student still and only work during the summer, so spending $2200 on a guitar after only playing for going on two years now is hard to explain to myself. but honestly after playing one its all ive been thinking about for like a month

Re: Best Martin under $3500
yea. that is a pretty short time experience wise to really justify investing in a top-of-the-line guitar... like matt said, get a good midrange that will last you until you know it's really time for that D35

Re: Best Martin under $3500
so i took a 20 minute drive to the music emporium today to check out some larrivees. i was playing the D-03R and also saw a Martin D16RGT and i was comparing the both of them. i liked the sound and the softness of the larrivee but the frets were kind of a problem, they were a little high and sharp to the point where it actually hurt to slide. playing one sweet world did not feel good to say the least. the martin was really comfortable, the action was perfect, the neck was sweet to play and the sound was great. so as of now the Martin D-16RGT is in the lead, plus its in my price range.
