Electric Overhaul

Unread post by sbhanot » Tue Jan 27, 2004 7:09 pm

Alright, here's the deal - I have a shitty Johnson electric from Ebay (you know, a typical 99 dollar deal) - and I have the shitty amp that came with it. I am looking to give it a facelift to make it a reasonable electric - I have an ultrasound acoustic amp, and a sweet takamine acoustic also (just to help you understand my dilemma) - so now, to the problem i need help with: 1) What should i do to turn my electric into a good guitar (I'm thinking new pickups and a new neck - any advice as to what's best and where i go to get that?).... also, 2) Can I use my electric with my ultrasound amp, which is made for acoustics? Will it damage it? And lastly, what is a killer distortion pedal? (So I can rock out hardcore, naturally, i was thinking a boss, but which one? Also, I was thinking of getting a digitech rp200, which should work for both the acoustic and the electric - but does that have overdrive and distortion and stuff?) - So any thoughts would be sweet.....

1) Check out some EMG and Seymour Duncan (my favs) pickups; get some new tuning machines, new neck, new wiring, new bridge... ok pretty much everything new except the body. check your nearest large guitar shop dealer.

2) youll need a pedal, dont know about damaging it.

3) i have a digitech rp300 that i need to sell for the same price as an rp200. send me a private message if interested.

1) Just get a new guitar.. you will get more for your money.. and if your guitar is "shitty" than there is really nothing on it worth keeping

2) Your acoustic amp will work just fine for your electric.. the reverse is never true because an electric amp creates artifacts in the sound that will never sound appropriate for an acoustic.. those artifacts will be lacking, but if you get a floor efx device that does "preamp modeling" it will cure this..

3) There are 'umpteen types of distortion for "rocking out;" your best bet is to go to a guitar shop and try them out, with any sort of effect, your guitar and amp will make it sound different so your mileage my vary, but you can always return and exchange.

The digitech rp200 is nice, lots of effects (tons of distortion for the 'rocking' of which you speak) and should work on both electric and acoustic. I had the RP100 for a long time, it was pretty nice.

I'd have to hear it.. I am sure there is some meddling with the sound.. but that is a twin channel amp with a superb clean side then.. and if your results are superb, that is by far not the norm.

playing w/o ANY effects, ive played through my amp AS WELL AS a rather large (300 watt) peavy tube amp with PERFECT acoustic sound.

you could make it sound even better with a nice preamp for the guitar, like an L.R. Baggs Para Acoustic D.I. or a Sansamp Acoustic D.I.
