Playing with a pick less and less...

Unread post by infoghost » Mon Jan 26, 2004 9:24 am

Anyone else find themselves not using picks as much? I still use them, but lately I find I have much more control with just my hands, with both picking and strumming. I think it's from the countless hours of sitting on my couch and playing without a pick, either because I couldn't find one, or I just grabbed the guitar.

i find it a lot easier to play without a pick, but it doesnt sound as good so i try to make myself play with a pick so it will sound better in the long run.

I rarely use a pick. I also encourage beginners to not use picks, so they can learn how to fingerpick quicker and easier than when you try to years later. The pick is some what of a crutch, sometimes, I think.

I find I have more control without a pick as well. It comes from having to play quietly. Kids are in bed, wife watching TV etc. Unfortunately I'm sloppy as hell for the first 15 or 20 minutes when I go back to using one.

I use one when I wanna play loud, like along with a recording or something, or when I wanna really jam out, but other wise Ive developed a weird style that is partly fingerpicking, mostly with my thumb index and middle, sometimes ring and pinky, and struming as if I had a pick in my hand. I like playing that way a lot too, but it just depends on what kinda mood Im in.

yeah, i'm with him... i see-saw on which to use when.... but for something like "everyday", or "recently", even "where are you going" i wouldn't use the pick... or maybe satellite sometimes... but whatever's clever!
