The Stone. What am I doing wrong?

Unread post by the_drewster » Sat Jan 24, 2004 3:00 pm

I want to play 1, just 1 DM tune well. That's all I'm asking.

E:-------------------------
B:-------------------------
G:-----2-------------------
D:---------3---5-5--2-3-2--
A:-5-----------------------
E:-------------------------

When I play The Stone, I'm picking the strings. When Dave (or some of you guys) play it, you look like your strumming. Daves right arm is going all over the play as he plays, where as my arm is still as I'm concentrating on hitting the next string. I don't think it's a matter of practise. I feel there's something particular I'm doing wrong. What's more, it sounds like he's hitting the string on the 5th fret (see above) 3 times, and not two. Maybe the last hit is muted. At the end of the day, I sound very amateurish. What am I doing wrong?

Here's a clip of me playing the first bit. It's only 150k.

Clip

Cheers all.

you must mute the strings right next to the string which is supposed to ring. and then strum 'em. It'll give you a nice fuller sound, it's what Dave does

Well your first problem might be trying this song if youre not already pretty good at guitar, its one of his hardest. Theres been dispute on what he actually plays, listen along with a solo or D&T version and just play it howevef you think seems best. As for the strumming vs picking, I pick it and it sounds fine because I cant do Daves strum mute technique, he basically strums only hitting the desired strind and a few more and jsut mutes the strings he doesnt want to ring out, in the case of this song, all of them except one depending on the note. Its hard as hell, Im content with picking for now cuz it sounds good, but just keep at it, or if becomes to hard, take a break, learn some more shit then come back to it later, odds are itll be easier.

are you alternate picking the 5's on the D string? you have kindof a pause before those, it should be a nice smooth rhythm, with the first of those two notes in time with the notes before it, then you hit the 5 again with an upstroke

How long have you been playing? It just might be out of your scope right now, which is not big deal.

for that pause, i usually swing my hand up a little higher than normal so it takes more time, creating the pause... that make sense to anyone?

Thanks for that. Nice one, Jayme. You've all given me a lot to work on. I'm gonna put the mute thing aside, and the strumming I'll come to shortly but before that. Can you alloborate on the Pause?? Are you saying there should be a pause or there shouldn't?? Where exactly should it be/not be??

I've slowed it right down and I can hear him play an extra note between the 5 and the 2, possibly another 2.

Fu*k, it's driving me mad. Maybe it's not a note, but there's something between the two. Boris, what is it? You're playing it.

The what's missing is an open note on the D string right at the end of the 1st riff?

Just keep at it, listen to the song, then attempt it, one note at a time you will hear it take shape and then all at once, you will sit down and everything will just click. As for letting it sit and learning other stuff, and then coming back....its a great idea.

Well I kinda strum that part, so I don't count the number of notes I play. Tell me if you need another video help.
