Electronics and Cutaways?
Just wondering....what's the connection between cutaway guitars and electronics? Is it just that it's normally only performers who want the ability to play higher up on the fretboard? Are there many cutaways out there without electronics (because I WANT ONE)?

Re: Electronics and Cutaways?
guitars that have electronics standard will almost always come with a cutaway too. i don't know why, thats just the way it is. most guitar brands are like this (martin, taylor, takamine, yamaha, etc.). there are some exceptions, but most of the time when you see dave or any other artist performing with a non-cutaway, they've custom installed the electronics in themselves.EntsMarching wrote:Just wondering....what's the connection between cutaway guitars and electronics? I think that this is usually because (and I may be WAAAY off base here) a lot of guitar purists don't believe in cut aways or electronics in that they somehow hurt the natural resonance of the guitars. In all reality, I don't think it's ever been proven that there's any difference to speak of, at least not one that's audible to human ears. So, they make the completely acoustic version for the purists/folks who have no need of the other stuff, and then the cutaway/electronics for performers and the like who use the added functionality of such items. That being said, it's not at all difficult to have electronics installed in a guitar, so you can very easily find the guitar you want, and then the electronics and have them installed.

How much would it cost to put a pickup and preamp in a regular dreadnaught? Is it possible to DIY?ticohans wrote:That being said, it's not at all difficult to have electronics installed in a guitar, so you can very easily find the guitar you want, and then the electronics and have them installed.

You don't wanna DIY an electronics install. You really don't have the tools to do it. It would be worth the cost (which i don't know off hand) to take it in and have it done professionally.sable wrote:How much would it cost to put a pickup and preamp in a regular dreadnaught? Unless of course, you just wanna get a soundhole pickup, in which case you DO do it yourself.

I had a martin thinline gold pickup put in mine for about 200 bucks if I remember correctly. Most of that cost was the pickup itself. I'm a big DIY when it comes to most things but acoustic guitars are one thing I won't touch for big stuff. Get it done proffesionally by a luthier you trust.

It's really not that hard to put a pickup and jack in a guitar. the hardest part is drilling the small hole in the bridge. talk about nervous. but otherwise it is a simple job. i am of the theory that everyone should know how to work on their guitar. from strings to truss rods to pickups. now it ever cracked from getting too dry or if i wanted an EQ or some big job like that, yeah i'd take it in. but basically you drill a small hole in the bridge saddle where the pickup goes. then you run a wire (and it usually comes already attached) to the jack. drill out the end pin just a bit and install the jack. viola a new pick up.
