Satellite question

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Satellite question

Unread post by dustin10 » Tue Jan 20, 2004 8:43 pm

Hey guys. I was just wondering if Dave uses alternate picking when he plays Satellite. I can play it just fine without using it but I was just curious if he does or not. Thanks in advance.

Do you mean switching up the way he plays "while" he's playing? Like, changing it up from the 4-6-8 way to the 4-6-3 way and then the barre at the G way? Or do you mean does he change the actual song and plays something totally different. Or do you mean does he change the way he picks the stings between up and downstrokes? Sorry for all the questions, there are a lot of different ways to play the song.

I know on the video I have of him playing at FarmAid of '01, he starts out picking down, and then picks up whenever he hits the A String. So it would go, 4(down), 6(down), 8(up), 4(down), 6(down), 3(up), and so on. But once he gets into the song he picks down throughout the rest of it. If that is what you are indeed talking about.

i did some flatpicking exercises and now i find myslef alternate picking all the time almost at random. you can't really tell except by watching.

ultimately i think dave uses straight down strokes but it can be done with alternating.

I think that he just does regular down strokes in a mini strum-pick combo that looks like "alternate picking". If he gets tired of thinking about the strings he is gonna hit I think that he uses his ring finger to mute the other strings and he just strums. That is what it seems like to me when I watch him play it.
