So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Pretty sure the Big Baby is like 15/16 the size of a regular full bodied guitar and the Baby is like 3/4 the regular size. I wouldnt go with the Baby (or either really, but especially the Baby). Seems like for your price range you could get a MUCH nicer gutiar if buying Alvarez like everyone has told you, I wouldnt be looking Martin or Taylor unless I was spending >$1,000.00 but thats just me. If you really cant play a lick and so you cant test out these guitars, find someone who can and bring them with you so you can hear differences and I would also make sure to hold it and at least just strum openly to see which one feels best to you as well.

Since you don't play guitar yet, I would buy something for $150-$200 just to start.

In a couple of years you buy a nicer guitar (like a >$1000 Martin) and you keep the beater to take to the beach and to play along with a friend that visits you.

Alvarez guitars can be relatively cheap but they have an awesome sound. Check them out if you get the chance.

guitar center is good for trying out instruments, since you could spend the whole day there if you wanted to and they won't boot you out. plus they've got a decent selection.

and i agree with trying out Alvarez

does anybody here have an Ovation 1778T Elite T? I got one like 9 months ago and i think its an incredible guitar. when i bought it it was $850, and now its $599, in my opinion its better than most of the taylors and martins ive played that r around $2000

Havent played that particular model, and maybe Im ignorant towards Ovations but Ive always thought them to be subpar guitars, I couldnt imagine a $600 Ovation sounds anywhere near a 2K Martin or Taylor.

You can get a Martin D35 for $2k... and no way it's worse than a plastic bag...

(just kidding, but I really don't think a $600 guitar with plastic back can beat any Martin above the 16 series...)

Everytime I meet someone who has an Ovation I never know what to say, Im always just like, "Oh... you have an Ovation"

They just look so cheap with that round back, are the backs always made of plactic?

ya well maybe im a little bias too cuz most of the taylors and martins ive played have been at guitarcenter and they all had really old, broken, shitty stirings that usually are a bit buzzy and.... maybe stale is the best way to describe them. but if u tried this model with up to par strings i think u'd be blown away by wat u get for the price, unless i just got the best one. but for ppl who r looking for a guitar under $1000, u should check this one out. plus i love the rounded backs, it fits perfectly into the slight curve of my body when i play, plus i think it sounds good

1) I would never buy an ovation
2) for under $1000 I would check Takamine or Alvarez guitars.
3) I want to go buy a Larrivee with my tax return/stimulus money.

i actually bought a cheap version of ovation. its an applause. 260 bucks and it plays better than most of the 400 to 800 dollar martins. this applause guitar just felt good when i was playing. thats all u gotta look for. what feels good. worry about the price of the guitar that feels go later. lol

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but I found this post interesting, as I am also just learning. I've played the drums for almost 14 years now and am trying to pick up guitar.

I can kinda fake-play #41, without the stretch in the intro. I'm messing around with Grey Street and LIOG too (as well as Dreaming Tree, Ants, Crush on the bass, which I'm also beginning to mess around with.)

Initially my goal was to be able to pull off some DMB songs with guitar/bass, record and then play drums to them. I didn't have any initial intention of going through the tedious stuff, books, learning the notes/chords, etc. but I'm really liking it so far. With a lot more free time this summer, I might just go all out and learn it the 'right' way.

But for now....Typical, Proudest, LIOG Jam....any other relatively easy DMB songs that I could learn?
