Ok, since nobody else spoke up, I will have to say something. Although it comes in time (muting that is) through your own practice at it, the best advice for anyone learning to mute is to RELAX YOUR FINGERS; rigid uptight fingers will only hinder you from your goal. I personally had never muted until I started playing the Dave chords...

G-----2-------------4---------
D-----0-------------0---------
A-----x-------------x---------
E-----2-------------3---------...ect.
But I think the first song that I learned to mute on really good is also the first Dave song I really learned to play...WAREHOUSE...
The key to WAREHOUSE is to always keep those chops going while muting between all of the notes.
Fit all of the progression in by ear_feel it_.
Another tactic that Dave uses that I have picked up is resting your strumming hand on the saddle to brush and give a thud-mute sound to the bass notes (i.e. WAREHOUSE acoustic solo.).
Other than that, just rest your muting finger(s) on the board to stop them from singing during those chords...don't press TOO hard, and PRACTICE!
Remember, alot of it is in the stumming.
