My advice would be to practice using a recorder of some kind so you can tell where you go wrong. Then work out the parts of the song that are out of key or sound wrong. Also, play for friends and they can tell you where ya mess up. This is basically how I learned and ive progressed quite a bit using this technique. Though if you have the money vocal lessons are prolly your best bet.

this took forever...thank me...
People can sing in their showers and hit a note when listening to a CD pretty easily. But to take that voice and make it into a stronger more confident voice is another thing. Its not just note placement that needs to be remembered when singing. There is breathing control, strength in your voice and mouth movements.
-Breathing Control/Using your diaphragm-
When singers first start, almost 100% of the time they will breath using there chest. This means when you take a deep breath in, your chest raises and your stomach stays the same. This does not give you the best control of your voice. When you breath in singing you should breath through your diaphragm, which is a small muscle between your chest and your abdoman. So when you breath through your diaphragm you stomach goes out and your chest doesnt move. Then with this technique you can hold your breath for longer, and control that breath a lot more. You will also notice a big change in your singing. For example you will be able to hold a note longer and it might even be louder then normal without shouting.
To use your diaphragm isnt enough, you have to build on it. The only way to build on your voice is to do exercises to warm up your vocal chords and stretch them to make them looser. There will be more on warming up later, but to build on your diaphragm, before singing you should take a deep breath in and slowly release you breath, make sure its a steady flow out but try and hold the breath for as long as you can. Time yourself and see how long it is, then keep practicing it. Each week time yourself at it, and see if you can hold your breath for longer.
-Strength in your voice-
There are 2 different ways to sing. Chest Voice (don't be mistaken with chest breathing) and head voice. Head Voice is used for really high singing. Female opera singers usually use head voice, but it is used in pop and rock songs aswell. Savage Garden use head voice alot in there songs. Chest voice is used by most common singers even beginners. But to make your chest voice strong, you must do scales. Depending on what you want, you do different scales. For a strong head voice, you start at your medium singing range and work your way up to the highest of your singing range. This will also give you a high chest voice aswell. But for proper Chest voice that is used in rock songs you need to start your scales at a low singing range, and build up. You can almost metally picture if you're singing in chest or head voice but the way it comes out, you will just be able to feel it.
-All these stregthening and building up, but how do I warm up to start-
Ok I should have put this first but oh well, it still kinda makes sence. You should warm up before any singing, otherwise you will strain your vocal chords causing damage on your singing ability. Warming up is basically scales both high range and low range, mixed in with breathing exercises. This is where being able to play a keyboard or piano really helps because you can make up new scales whenever needed. But if you cant then you can pick up CDs with the scales on them at most music stores. When warming up, you must cover every aspect of singing. Like warming up for a sporting matching, you dont do strides straight away. You start small. First off start with humming the scales. This helps the vocal chords not get tight and cause you to sing through your throat which is the quickest way to destroy your voice. Then after humming go into low range scales where your vocal chords use the vibrating of the lower singing to warm up. Then work up to your higher range. It is also important, that when you get to your highest range of sing you come back down and do not stop at your highest range, otherwise it doesn't loosen your vocal chords just stretches them too far. There are other warm ups for different things but after these warm ups you are ready to sing.
