Who can play the entire song?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

I can play some of dave songs. I have only had a couple that I got stumped on, and when I did get stumped I practiced the part that stumped me until I became more comfortable with it. For example One sweet world I can play all of it well but the verse needs to be dead on for me to feel like I have got it , and not just in sound but also the way Dave is playing it. so I will play the intro one time through and then the verse for 5 to 10 minutes and then make up my own riffs in the same style of playing that stumped me. I move on to the intro to warehouse and play it over and over. I do the same with you never know, so damn lucky and others, all the while focusing on the parts that I seem to have a tough time with until I get it. I don't however sit down with the cd and play all the way through. WHY? I am glad you asked. Because I find it very hard to sing along with daves style of playing and I don't sound anything like him. Can I play Daves songs all the way through? SOME. I just don't do it that often. I feel I need to master this song, and when I get it I move to another. One more thing. I used to play LIOG all the way through (my wife loves that song) I later watched a Video of dave playing it and I realized HEY he's not picking those notes he's is struming the mother f@#$er. I now practice the way he plays it, and I still don't have it down. So thats where I am with playing Daves songs all the way through. (Some day)

Gotta know the whole song. Nothing wrong with picking up a few licks here ane there but, if you are going to ask people to listen to you, give them something to listen to.

Re. the talking and playing at the same time. Excellent practice. Most of you can sing way better than you think you can. Just find your own voice (Dave's is pretty hard to mimic) for a song and the best way to do this is use your speaking range. Get a metronome too so you can really nail the timing for the guitar line before you try singing it...

bullshit.

american beer is not confined to bud, coors and miller, which all happen to be shit. there are LOADS of micro-breweries and mini-breweries that put out exceptional brews, you just have to find them.

sam adams is good beer. beers don't win international awards if they suck, period. yuengling is also a very good american beer, and just happens to be the 1st brewery in america. :)

same here but without the recording
youre not really playing it if youre just following someone else
well i could play the bass line solo.. but with the added accompaniment of the recording.,, its much more interesting and is easier for me to dance and groove to.

I'm not great but to me being able to play Stay(Wasting Time), If I had It all, What would you say and Crash all the way through are some acomplishments and I've only been playing dave for a little over 2 months.

I used to do the same thing, learn just about every lick in the song but never actually learn how to smooth them together. That all changed when i decided to start recording myself. Give that a try. It sounds pretty lame when you lay down a track of tidbits.
I used to practice the same way. I felt that I had a song down if I could play the individual parts. Now I don't move on until I can smoothly transition from one part to the other. Which is a real challenge for some songs. The Stone for one example.

I really don't think the stone is that hard to transition to/from.... I think some other songs are harder, so much to say for example, the verse where u hit the 135 then the 10x710 chord. That always trips me up.

About the original topic. I know bits and pieces of most, only the parts that I like I guess. But about half of the songs I know, I can play all the way through. Since DMB songs are longer than most, I have trouble being able to play the entire time, but I know all the parts.

I'm a little pickier with when I say I know a song. I can play many many songs the whole way through, including a lot of DMB. but I really only count a song as a song I can play if I can play it all the way through and sing on key to the whole song, cause for me at least, there's a huge amount of time between being able to play a song and being able to play it well enough to sing along well. that's just me
