Fret and Fretboard Cleaning
Fret and Fretboard Cleaning
So... I have neglected to change my strings frequently for probably the past two years (since I've been to college and haven't had the extra money). I really want to clean up the frets and my fretboard as they are pretty dirty. However, I've never actually cleaned a guitar's playing surface. What would all of you recommend I use (that's gentle) to basically remove the crud? Do any of you have tips (or, i guess, product suggestions)? Thanks in advance.

I usually use a lightly dampened soft cloth

There are some types of lemon oil I'd recommend using every so often. You can get them at any guitar store.

I only ever used it once every few months. I liked it.

Re: Fret and Fretboard Cleaning
I actually cleaned up my guitar yesterday with just a damp soft cloth and it actually seemed to do the trick just fine... I'd be nervous to put anything on the exposed fretboard wood. Although murphy's oil soap would probably actually be good for it. Never thought of that, though.

never put lemon oil/polish/anything on your guitar. just use a damp cloth of warm water.

This seems to be one of the classic debates that goes along with the chicken and the egg. I've talked to some people who say to never use lemon oil but then my old guitar teacher, along with other people, who also happens to be a luthier used lemon oil.

Re: Fret and Fretboard Cleaning
I use a damp cloth/or thick paper towel, with warm (def not cold) water to get the grime off then dry it down thouroughly. No idea on the lemon oil thing, but I would assume the acid content is very low despite it coming from a very acidic fruit.

Re: Fret and Fretboard Cleaning
I have heard both, lemon oil or water, equally. I use something called "Guitar Honey" to clean and renew my fretboard, its always nice
