Who can play the entire song?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Who can play the entire song?

Unread post by erikro » Mon Jan 12, 2004 9:41 pm

Hi all,

Obviously there are some talented guitarists in this forum. I am just wondering though how many people can really play what they say they can. For me if I say I can play a song I mean I can play along with the recording to the end. How many other people actually mean that? I have no doubt some of you can but I also bet there are some who play a riff a few times and think they have the song down. Let me know.

Thanks
Erik

i can for most songs, but for some i just dont feel like learning all the parts simply because i dont care enough to.

i used to do that, learn a part of a song then say i knew it. but now if i take the time to look at the tabs i learn the whole song, it doesnt take me long at all.

I really dont learn a song unless I intend to finish it. Just a rule for me. I have a friend that thinks he is kickass at the guitar because he can play few riffs. Truth is, they arent that hard and he doesnt even know ONE song all the way through. If you are going to learn a song, learn the SONG!

You definitely have to learn the song all the way through. I had a nasty habit when I first began playing to just learn riffs of songs that I liked. Thank god I've changed my ways...now learning a song for me is learning start to finish, playing along with the recording...now if I could only sing at the same time...DOH!!

a lot of people start playing only riffs of songs, but after they actually have been playing for a little bit realize how boring it is to only play a few riffs of a song then move onto another song.

I can probably play around 3/4's of his songs, not counting those with weird tunings, like ones off everyday and the new solo album. Maybe a little less, but I can play almost all the songs I want to

If your drinking Samuel Adams you must be broke, drink Sierra Nevada

I used to do the same thing, learn just about every lick in the song but never actually learn how to smooth them together. That all changed when i decided to start recording myself. Give that a try. It sounds pretty lame when you lay down a track of tidbits.
