Finger excercises are just different combinations of fretted notes that are played up and down the fretboard, usually on one string at a time. They're invalauble to devloping left hand finger independence, as well as developing speed and accuracy. THey are a really good way to get better as a guitarist instead of just learning harder and harder songs. THey also improve your right hand picking technique, or if you finger pick them, they will also improve the independence of your right hand fingers.

Go and buy "speed mechanics of lead guitar". It has a lot of finger excercises and is a really really really good way to improve on the technical aspects of guitar. IT even improves your rhythm, having a section devoted to rhythm playing, which mostly is juste playing with a metronome. I've been doig a lot of Segovia's Slur Exercises and Chromatic Octaves, and I've noticed a huge difference in playing ability and finger speed. Invaluable.

Peace.

Depends on whaty ou want to play. For rhythm only, I would still probably get it and practice the rhythm section. If you plan on playing any Reynolds, definetley get it, he is FAST. Either way, the book will definetley improve finger dexterity and finger speed and accuracy.

Think of guitar as a sport, such as football. These excercises are things like squats and deadlifts, which increase your ability to perform better at the sport.

I'm not too sure about that. I do know that any fast guitarist has spent hours upon hours running through scales or finger excercises, you just cant be born with the accuracy and finger speed required to play something like reynolds, it is a technique which is carefully worked on with time. I'm pretty sure that if you practice something everyday for a while, you can gradually speed the whole thing up and develop a faster playing style.

I think speed can be learned, or at least I hope. Developing speed takes time tho and is hard, but I think it can be learned.

i think its more like, you either have TALENT or you don't. If you have talent, then like you won't need as much work and will be much better much faster than someone who doesn't. someone w/out talent just will have to work must harder.

this was my first reaction. it helps to have someone to push you, to make you take the next step. like where would john be without paul and vice versa. of course you don't need to be a veritable god of rock to reap the benefits of jamming.

i've come up with a bunch of crazy riffs while jamming over simple chords with my buddies. and you never know what you might say when making up lyrics on the spot.

when i write songs it usually starts with a riff. or a couple of riffs (for the different parts) then i add some lyrics. anything will work, i don't really care how profound or "good" they are. but i wait patiently and i'll find myself with a thought and a new lyric that is just perfect and then i write the rest of the song around that one or two lines that just kinda "come to me"

i think it was Bono who said, "We can take credit for the good songs, but the great songs come from 'Somewhere Else.'"
yeah its really amazing at how much better i get as i jam with people
and its kind of a social thing too
like conversing, but through the guitar

i have 15 matty boom points, and frankly, i dont give a shit
