So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

As a new player, I'd suggest against going to Guitar Center. On the whole, their employees are motivated only by commission and are not very helpful, so if you need detailed help, I'd much more strongly suggest going to a local store. They're going to be willing to take the time to help you and to get you the instrument for you.

Now as recommendations go, there are a tremendous amount of nice guitars out there. It's much easier for us to help if you can provide a price that you'd be comfortable spending. Some people are looking to start in the $150 range and others like to jump head-first into a $2000+ guitar. I wouldn't recommend either, frankly.

There you go then. You can find plenty of quality guitars in that price range. I got an Alvarez that I love for about that. You just gotta get out there and start playing around and find a guitar that speaks to you. And I like the advice from Sims. Stay away from the chain stores.

You don't have to play a song. Just strum it a few times and see how it sounds.

Like some have said, definitely drop into the store (preferably not Guitar Center, but it'll suffice) and mess around with as many guitars as you can with the time you have. Especially as a beginner not knowing what kind or size of guitar fits you, the best thing to do is just go and play a bunch of different ones.

Also, don't worry about songs yet. Best place to start I would say is some basic, open chord formations. Chords like D, A, G, F, C, Bm, and Am are found in many, many DM songs and if you get those down, a lot of his material with begin to open up for you. Good luck man

i got my first guitar at guitar center, but i had my uncle with me whos been playing all his life to help me find a quality guitar for cheap money. if u know someone who plays it wouldnt be a bad idea bringing them along to help. if u dont, then i suggest u do wat everyone else said. when i went i only knew 1 riff that someone i know wrote, and i just played it on every guitar i picked up. i ended up with a $300 Yahama FG730S, its probably like half the price now i would assume. but recently i picked up a $900 Ovation Elite T, which is one of the nicest sounding guitars ive ever played, probably cuz all the really nice ones at guitarcenter have old strings that r out of tune on them, bastards. but to this day i still play my Yamaha regularly, its not bad for the money, good learning guitar. good luck
