I agree [god help me] and disagree with this statement.
I agree that there is an enormous amount of singer/songwriter types out there... it was bound to happen and I can't say that the music industry is worse off for it. Let's face it, it was time for something... even the pop-princess of the moment writes her own songs and plays guitar. It's the same as grunge, pop-punk, boy bands... it's just a trend.
That being said... it's obvious it's a trend that is not really a trend... why? Because there will always be singer/songwriters... Dylan, Taylor, Simon, Marley... this category will always exist... it just happens to be popular right now.
[Putting on flame-resistant pants] Now, I don't think that the artists you list are "copying" Dave's style... no more than Dave copies from his influences... Mayer has a thing all his own, as does Howie Day, Jason Mraz, and Jack Johnson. It's not like they all sat down one day and said "how can I write songs like Dave Matthews", it just happens... it's called influence.
And when the little girls stop listening to John Mayer and Dashboard Confessional they will fade, but DMB will still be touring their asses off.
Cheers!

i think all those guys would love to claim daves songs. shit wouldnt that be awesome if you could just call one of daves songs your own...i dream that I could have just made that first riff up in SMTS...I would rule the world. that one riff and others in dave's songs blow away whole songs those other guys have written, including singing.

hehe i guess i'm a little girl then?HiFiKing wrote:And when the little girls stop listening to John Mayer and Dashboard Confessional they will fade, but DMB will still be touring their asses off.

you can't try to tell me jm doesn't have unbelievable talent.. dc has a few good songs (though not *too* high on my list)
what i think is kind of rediculous, is how any singer that hits the stage with an acoustic guitar and gains any kind of acceptance is automatically labeled a Dave wannabe. if i were to ever "make it" i would be on stage with an acoustic guitar. i think we're going to see a huge influx of acoustic guiter playaz just because of dave (i would be one of them). if everyone looked at it like they were just wannabes there wouldn't be any acoustic players, which would be a shame.
now re-read that without the preachy attitude turned off, not preaching just stating.

I did not mean to slag them... I've been to see JM 4 times and know every word to the DC album... I'm just making refrence to their "commercial" appeal of the moment...TrippnBill686 wrote:hehe i guess i'm a little girl then?HiFiKing wrote:And when the little girls stop listening to John Mayer and Dashboard Confessional they will fade, but DMB will still be touring their asses off.![]()

I knew I was in trouble when my 16 year-old sister who HATES DMB asked me to make her a JM CD. Oy-vey... I nearly wanted to cry... so I made her a DMB CD and labeled it John Mayer... she still hated it.

Just a thought...waffle_house_jam wrote:almost everybody in the music industry has unbelievable talent (except pop stars and stuff, but that's not the music industry, it's advertising) so it really doesn't matter-it's how the person uses that talent.
Is JM pop? He is "pop"ular...
Discuss...

dave matthews in 1998 or 1999 or something was the second highest paid musician in the world next to elton johnwaffle_house_jam wrote:naturally. not just for the talent, but remember, dmb's the 4th richest band. everybody wants to be dave...
Everybody always asks me how she's doing. Has she really lost her mind? I said "I couldn't tell you, I've lost mine."

'his' songs arent all shittyDmbFanJason wrote:yea, hes a good guitar player...well, excellent...I did hear his cover of wind cries mary, but "his" songs are boring and bland, and so shitty compared to daves, they sound like avril levines guitar work.
try 'neon' and 'victoria' and 'back to you'
those are pretty good
and as for comparing him to dave?
listen to his cover of lover lay down
i think he should tour with them

see? who wouldn't want to be dave?
except i think now he may be headed downhill....hopefully the new tim reynolds acoustic tour will spark up new interest and (maybe?) a new live album....i just hope i don't go to hear "an acoustic medley of the entire everyday album, and maybe some john mayer covers too!" haha
