Need some direction please
Need some direction please
Hi all,
This is my first post. I have been reading them for a while. Of course I love Dave and want to play his music. I know some first position chords and can play a couple of Beatle tunes. I went all out and bought a D-35 the other day. So now I want to learn Dave. So where should I start? What songs? Whats a good way to learn? Any tips you can give would be great. I am trying Crash and Grey Street. The muting on Grey Street is giving me some problems. Also are there any players out there not using a pick? I live in an apartment situation where playing with a pick is too loud. Any advice on that? I look forward to learning a lot here. Thanks to all.

I play with a pick... I know some here don't. Crash is a good song to start with, as is grey street. Just get practice practice praaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaccccccccccccccctiiiicccccccce, get those down, and then go onto Lie In Our Graves or the Stone. They're a little bit harder, but challenger yourself.erikro wrote:Hi all,

As for the pick, tell whoever it is to lick your balls.
and welcome to the boards!!!!

sometimes i play with a pick sometiems i dont.... sometimes times i find it best not to like on chirstmas song (imo), and grace is gone.....as for learning ... when i first started, i just played any little piece of a dave song i could get down, and i just practiced that over and over....like the beginnings of #34 ,christmas song, trpping billies, etc..... it really is practice practice practice... i also listened to dave for about 6 years before i started playing him so all the songs i went to play i pretty much knew how they sounded and the rythem of them, that helped me a lot too.
Everyone has given great advice.
In my opinion, and this seems to come up over and over, these are the easiest songs to play starting out:
1. Crash- will help build strength in 4th, 5th fingers
2. Song that Jane Likes - lots of first position chords
3. Typical Situation- play using open strings instead of up on the neck. chorus is great for practicing chords ( you can simplify to G-F-Am-C- then slide "C" 1st to 3rd fret, not sure the real name for this chord-- fatjack? blahsus#add?
)
4. Lie in our Graves- fun to play
5. Stuck on You - Elvis cover - easy 12 bar blues.
just some thoughts.... and of course, if you work hard at anything it eventually becomes easier!

I think you're quite insane for buying a D-35 as a starting guitar player, honestly. I've been playing for 2 years, and own a martin dx1. If you decide to quit, that's one hell of a debt to put yourself into. But yea, other than that, just practice as much as you can like these other guys told you toerikro wrote:No I am not loaded. Samash.com is having 15 months no pay no interest so I just said why not. Anyone else have a D-35? What are your thoughts? Thanks for all the replies.

Congrats on the purchase, but I agree. I learned on a crappy Yamaha FG series (~$200) for 8 years before my martin DM. When I started playing golf, I bought a used set first, and I'm still using it... just a general principle....DMBFan63 wrote:I think you're quite insane for buying a D-35 as a starting guitar player, honestly. well...there's also a theory about starting on stuff that if you start off with the top of the line, you're more likely to enjoy it and continue doing whatever it is...so rock out with your cock out, al a mode

I know, a d-35 but why not? Anyone else have one? It is a lot of fun to play. Like I said previous samash.com is having 15 months no pay no interest so go for it people. Get what you want and be happy. It is only money. I really wanted a d-28 but they didnt have any in stock and I didnt want to wait a month so I went with the d-35.
