the stone

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

start slow, get the fingerings and picking correct doing it slowly, then build up speed...it will hit you...the 3 gets hit very quickly....when dave does it i'm pretty sure he's strumming the entire song which is why he can do it so smoothly and quickly...but you can do it just fine straight picking it....keep plugging at it and it'll come!

Download a Dave & Time version of it. It's a lot easier to get the timing from that rather than listening to the whole band. I had the same problem that you did and the acoustic version helped me greatly!

I can't play it either, but it may help if you can find a video from the charlie rose show. Dave plays this song solo (no Tim, and no Band) with some good shots of his hands while he is playing.

the charlie rose show helped me alot when learning it.... but actually what helped me more( and this goes for a lot of dave songs) was to sing along with the guitar part sort of...

Yeah, just download 7-10-99 show. Its a radio show and its just dave but the charlie rose show would be just fine as well. I think the radio show has closer views and better sound though.

This Strum or pick Question has been asked alot. Do a search for Questions on the stone, and you will find a shit load of stuff. I used to pick through it until I saw the the KFOG video. Dave starts with a half strum hitting 2 or 3 strings around the string he's fretting while muting the others. When Dave is ending the song he strums fast hitting almost all the strings muting all but the strings he is fretting. I find playing it this way sounds better and is alot easier/more relaxed to play when you get the mutes down. He plays other songs using this same technique, like Ants, LIOG,and Stay. Watch as much video as you can get your hands on or download.

this might sound a little off...

this might sound a little off to some, but i would suggest practicing loving wings to get down the muting of one string. I practiced loving wings for like a day or two and got the rhythm down and muting sounding good. then stone might just come easier like it did to me
