So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

practice. im sure everyone gets sick of hearing that, but the only way to make your hands stretch far enough for a lot of dave chords is to just keep playing them until you stretch out the muscles and tendons until your fingers can spread really far. so just keep on playing.

i think i actually have an alternative to those chords-or at least a good second guitar part. i learned #41 by ear at first, and this is a basic idea of what i came up with for the intro:
i know it's probably wrong, but it sounds great when played over the real chords.
E:-0---0---0---0----------------
B:-1---3---3---3-----------------
G:-0---0---0---0-----------------
D:-2---4---4---4-----------------
A:-0---0---5---2----------------
E:--------------------------

E:-0---0---0---5----------------
B:-1---3---3---3-----------------
G:-0---0---0---0-----------------
D:-2---4---4---4-----------------
A:-0---0---5---5----------------
E:--------------------------
i sort of use these interchangably. i just thought i'd post and let you guys try it out and tell me what you think

I think the key to those chords is the placement of your thumb. move your thumb and palm around under the neck until your fingers get into position.

I can make the stretches fine but i'm having problems getting the hammer down on the fourth chord in the intro to sound right...is the whole chord strummed when you hammer down or do you just strum the g string?

it's definitely NOT the whole chord. you can throw in another string if you want, but it's minimal.

as to alternate chords, i had a friend once with really small hands and who couldn't get 41 at all. these are the chords i suggested to him:

-0--x--x--x-
-0--0--8--3-
-5--7--0--0-
-5--0--x--4-
-0--x--7--5-
-x--7--0--x-

e-0---0---0---0---
b-1---3---8---3---
g-2---0---0---0---
d-2---4---9---4---
a-0---2---7---5---
e-----------------

#41 is probably my favorite song to play, and I disagree with the tab they have posted up, on the "hammer on part" of the intro i think it should be more like this...

E:-------------------------------------- (the chord in the middle of the
B:---------------8---3--3---- 3---3--- hammer on and pull off is
G:---5-----7-----4---x--0h4--0-- x--- really quick and barely audible)
D:---2-----4-----5---4--x---- x---4p0-
A:---3-----5---7-7---5--5---- 5---x---
E:-5-5---7-7----------------------------

Sorry if this is repetitive im sorta new to the message board.

you think that pull off on the D string is there? could be. instead of that, I do 3 quick strums there and I hit the G string one more time before the first intro chord again.
good, and you?

You should just learn the chords. Start with other songs that use similar chords farther up the neck, Recently, or When The World Ends would work. Or play the song with a capo. My hands are average sized and I just finally got my smack to stretch far enough to play crazy/captain. Which when I first tried crazy/captain I was like WTF he can't be playing this through the whole song. good luck and S----T----R---E----T----C----H

The way I play it helps to hit the chords easier. When hitting a chord, place your third and fourth fingers down first to get a hold, then lay down the first and second fingers. and here is an easier chord to play than the third chord, which is the hardest to stretch
