Is John Mayer a better guitar player than Dave Matthews?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

(Keep in mind I'm not implying strength of career has anything to do with talent) I think youre just being the devil's advocate here, cause unless your definition of career is different than mine, there's no way that makes any sense. DMB has been touring for over a decade, and theyve been one of the top grossing $ acts for the past 4 or 5 years. As much as you'd like to see your boyfriend make it that big, youre kidding yourself if you think he's going to.

I know DMB's huge, but I think John Mayer could do as much if not more...John Mayer I think has more universal appeal than DMB. Bear in mind, DMB has had a lot of trouble taking off worldwide where John Mayer is more marketable. John has so much talent that if he uses it correctly, I think he will go down as a great. But that's a big if...if he plays his cards right, he can do it. DMB is fluttering out at this point...they had a great ten year run but they won't keep it up for much longer. Many people believe that their next CD may be their last. I doubt anyone knows for sure now, but I wouldn't be surprised. I think Mayer has the capability to get the success that DMB has gotten at this point and not only that, maintain for a lot longer time than DMB has. I don't really care either way. As much as you guys think I'm some huge Mayer fan, I'm really not. I hardly listen to DMB at all and I don't listen to Mayer a whole lot more than that...I just call it how I see it.

mayer may be more marketable...but i don't think he will have a fan base like DMB and therefore i don't think his touring will ever be as big, so i don't think his career will surpass dave's.
B+P by offer only...thank you

I doubt he'll have the hardcore fanbase either, DMB really has a strong hold on that, but as far as commercial success and overalll standing in the entire music world, I think john mayer easily has the potential to take the cake.

I think if he can survive a couple more years then we'll start seeing some real good stuff come from him...he's still young, single and stupid now, but everyone grows up...I'm holding out...

It's very rare for a band to get a following like DMB. I think Mayer is great, but I don't think there is any way in hell he will get that following, imho. I just does not happen that often. It's saying something when you HAVE to play stadiums, and pack them in everytime.

As for talent, I think it is stupid to say either is better, they both do different things. I think Dave is also a much better songwriter. Whatever 'it' is, Dave has it. Something about what he does connects with people on a much higher level. I'd like to see Mayer have all the success in the world, but I think it's reaching to say he will be as big or bigger than DMB.

I like them both, but DMB has reached a plateau very few bands reach.

theres no way in hell that john mayer will get a fan base like dave if his lyrics don't change haha he still has to pull off a more diverse sound then just doing some mellow electric leads in my opinion

John needs to get a better band. Dave has a band fullo f "world" class musicians and john just has somemediocre musicians. I am not saying they are bad or anything, hell they could be incredible, but he only writes music for him, I guess. Dave has more fan appeal imo because he has musicians that show what they are and more musicians can appreciate the band for that

they are both really good musicians but when u combine there talents on guitar with daves ability as a writer john mayer can just fade away.......i mean a good band makes up for a lot but it doesn't make up for the inabiility to write about anything but a photo, the state of georgia, highschool drama, or some chick haha

but i gotta contradict myself in thte fact that lyrics come with experience and maybe some day mayer will be able to support his musical talent with that aspect by right now his little guitar riffs on his strat aren't persuasive enough to make me rate him over dave

umm, stefan vs. dela...dela

butch vs. onrei...comparable

chavez vs. timmy or any other backing artist...comparable

jm horns vs. leroi...jm horns...

scotty on sleighbells vs. boyd...scotty (!!!!!!!)

JJ vs. Carter...Carter

ummm, not really...no one's going to touch Carter on the drums, but everyone else in the band is as good if not better than anyone in DMB, no doubt about it...
