difficulty with ants on bass.

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

I am having the hardest time with ants marching on bass...i just can't seem to get the timing/slides whatnot down in the verse. any suggestions on techniques for this song? thanks in advance.

ha, so was i. ants is a ton of fun to play once you get it down, my advice is to play it slow over and over again, and then speed up little by little. i divide the verse into two parts, the first part ends with the G (3rd fret Estring,). just break it down and play it slow. the second part ends with the D, (5th fret Astring). personally, i fret this part instead of sliding, because it sounds much cleaner. i believe stefan does it this way too. fretting this part can be tricky, since you may have just gotten the hang of sliding on the first part, but do whatever sounds/feels best. if you want, i maybe able to record/post the bassline for the whole song. throw me an AIM if you wanna chat dude. good luck, and i like tic tacs too, but only wintergreen ones.

Yeah, that bassline is a TON of fun to play. Very energetic. The main riff is a toughie at first. I actually never tried sliding during the verse...always just fingered it. Felt a lot more natural to me.

The other part I had issues with was the climb up the neck (first time 'Quieter time...' is played, etc.). I've noticed Stefan splits it over the D and G strings, but I learned by just climbing the D. Can be tough with my smaller fingers (lots of stretching), but I find that by climbing that string only it sounds better.

The best part of that by far is the funk intro. Gotta love the funk.

Mm...when he does slap it is good stuff. I need to work on my slap technique, I am not that great at it. And yes Stefan is a very well rounded bass player.
