Pay For What You Get

Unread post by i-am-me » Sun Jan 04, 2004 3:46 pm

First i'd like to say that this song is awesome. its so powerful for such a simple song.

But my question that i've wondered since the first time i heard it is...

Did anythingl ike this really happen to him? did one of his loved one actually go insane or something?? or is he just telling a random story? or what?

Well, I'm not sure anyone other than Dave really knows, but the generally-accepted story is that Julia Grey, Dave's longtime girlfriend, did go a little crazy (it is widely believed that Grey Street is about her as well).

It'd be a cool thing to know.. maybe someday dave will help write a book about his songs.. if he was able to remember them
Someone also was trying to see if HHW was an early form of PFWYG, but that proved to be wrong since i believe PFWYG came out before HHW

ooooo, speaking of Heathcliff's, there will be something I have recorded being posted in the Recording section on tuesday ;).

Anyways, Pay For What You Get was written with one purpose. People were telling Dave to write more songs, so he wrote this song, saying, "hey, you pay for what you get." You can hear the first few lines is what Dave sings in what I only know of was an intro to Ants Marching called 2001 (can anyone clear what that song really is?). Also, yes, there is stuff in it about Julia, he has said that as well as why he wrote the song.

dave bullshits a lot when explaining his songs...
"Forget about what you are escaping from," he said, quoting an old maxim of Kornblum's. "Reserve your anxiety for what you are escaping to."
