IBYU...a bit different

Unread post by gravesRR7 » Thu Jan 01, 2004 9:22 pm

With all of the covers of IBYU recently, i thought i'd give mine a shot, but with no vocals, just guitar, lets see what yall think.
i'm not trying to upstage anyone, just thougt i'd add some variety, and have some fun seeing if i could makea melody guitar sound good.

mics always sound better than guitar pickups, might be a good investment to get an inexpensive active mic and utilize cool edit pro for recording...

think about it...a mic picks up the real sound of a guitar while a pickup just picks up the vibrations of the strings which results in a very tinny sound...I don't know all the details behind how pick ups work, but trust me on it...

because there is no way an internal pickup can get the natural sound of a guitar like a microphone can

i liked it...just a few too many notes sometimes that sound rushed and off. i think with some cleaning up this could be a great instrumental track. :)

Hell Yes! using a mic. for a guitar makes the recording sound soooo much better then plugging a pickup in.. that's why you usually see D&T shows, and they are mic'd and plugged into a pickup..

I'm gonna have to go with a pairing.. I think a bridge transducer plus a mic is the best sound you can get (see my IBYU cover). Something like a bridge transducer will get you better tone response on the lower-end, and the mic will get a better response on the high-end, mixing the two, you can get a pretty even balance.. The problem with a mic is that it needs to be entirely too close to get a good response on way low frequencies (by design). So, the low-E for example will sound pretty weak if you just mic the guitar, and on the counter, you will be lacking all the high harmonics if you just use an internal pickup. And usually, in this configuration, pointing the mic towards the base of the neck will yield a better mix.

Anyways, IANARE (I Am Not A Recording Engineer )

alright, i have a pretty good instrument mic, but when i record with it, there is a bunch of static. its not even too bad, but compared to when you plug the guitar right into the computer, there is a lot. any tips on limiting the static input?

hey dude, I enjoyed listening to this very much. It was reall good. I normally don't listen to instrumental, but this one is an exception.

The rhythm track sounds really solid. Nothing to criticize there.
the lead track sounded good to me, some stumbles with the timing here and there though.

Damn good job, wouldn't mind to do a collaboration thing with you sometime....

:D sweet. i'm up for anything.

some of the lead tracks stumbled because there was a change at one point from the tracks. i had to stop it. then it kind of screwed up the timing. and i was lazy and never fixed it, but i realized that too.
thanks for listening
