Taylor 110 or Ibanez AW100
I have a Taylor 110 (just bought it) but it is difficult to play. This seems weird to me since guitar magazines and websites (acoustic guitar mag for example) have raved about the sound and excellent playability of this guitar. The action seems a little high and it's hard to play. And the frets are rough (sticking out) when you run your hand on the outside of the fret board. I would take it back but it seems like most of them feel like this.
Anyway---the Ibanez AW100 seems easier to play but definitley doesn't sound as good. Any recommendations?

i have an ibanez AW-100... I would recommend it definitly. The neck on the taylor is wider than the the Ibanez that is why you are having trouble. The AW-100 is awesome for a $300 guitar... I would buy it and then save for the next guitar to be a serious taylor or martin, just my 2 cents. By the way is this your first guitar?

I don't know the neck width for a fact... per se... but i have played the taylor and to me the AW-100 definitly seemed to have a slimmer neck and easier to play... You can always just go back to the store grab both guitars back to back and see which one you like more... I would tell you to save the extra $230... cause if you don't stick to playing guitar thats just more money that you will have lost... plus i like the appearance of the AW more... the bottomline is you have to decide on what feels and sounds better to you... let me know how it works out..myonlybliss wrote:yeah--it is my first guitar so i'm thinking ease of playability is more important than sound right now and i have 30 days to return the taylor
just out of curiosity, how do you know the neck widths? or that the taylor is wider than the ibanez?
do you know what gauge strings come on the ibanez?
oh and the AW i think it comes with light strings... if you are just starting out... string gauges and neck with facts won't make a difference... you have to play on something to get a sence of comparison...

i too am a beginner and starting out on a taylor 110 (it was a bday present from my wife).
i've only been playing for a couple of months. i hated playing it at first but now i really love playing my taylor. i think one of your problems may be that the 110 comes with medium gauge strings and can be difficult for a beginner. i switched them out for dean markeley lights after about a month. makes it alot easier to play.
people always advice to play and see how it feels to you, but if you're just starting out and don't know how to play, how can you accurately determine which one you would like better after you learned how to play?
as for the frets sticking out, it's probably because the guitar is dry. mine got like that and i put a homemade humidifier in my case and it's helped alot.
sorry for the long post, but hope my many cents make sense and help a bit in your decision.

hey there, i myself own an Ibanez AW100cent guitar and i love the thing to death. Not only is it a great looking guitar with the cutaway and albonette surrounding around the sound hole (which makes the guitar look like $800) But every person that has touched my guitar always comments on how incredible the action is. The strings on this guitar are so low to the fret but produce such a rich sound. I was either going to buy this guitar or a Martin and i chose the Ibanez due to the low price and amazing sound. I say go with the Ibanez...cant beat it

And did the humidifier make the frets smooth again??
Thanks
it's not as loud with the lights, but still loud enuf to me. i'm no expert with tone and such, so i can't really tell you specific differences. sounds good to me tho.
the humidifier definitely helped. i can barely feel the frets stick out now, and i know the guitar should probably still be wetter.
hope that helps and good luck with the decision!

I miss my Ibanez(AW100)
I bought one a while ago(the beautiful metallic blue) at a store in my town. I was the first one to play it and the owner almost didn't want me to get it cause he wanted to play it. Unfortunetly, i had to sell it to pay bills
Get the Ibanez.

I played a 110 with awesome action.Beauford33 wrote:I played a taylor 110 earlier and The action on the guitar is way high. This meaning the strings are high of the fret board. This is what I think your problem is. You have to compare this to other guitar to be sure.
