Hey guys - Would love feedback on a tune from the studio

Unread post by afurth » Tue Jul 24, 2007 9:28 am

This is a song from my band's new album - the lyrics are about stardom and its fleeting nature. its kind of a look at what happens during the "16th minute" of fame - a burned out "star"

its called "supernova"

I especially like the solo my lead player does at the end. Mostly looking for feedback on lyrics or arrangement. Thanks!

I like the song, you use the lofi voice thing pretty well but if it were me, i would just use it on the first verse and leave it off, no need to disguise a good voice.

Post the lyrics if you can, its easier to critique that way.

I am not that fond of the mix, the drums lack a little umph and the acoustic is too loud. Overall it just needs the low end filled out a bit.

The playing is excellent though, and i really like the lead at the end. This is a good song with a lot of potential, just fill out the low end, drop the lofi thing after the first verse and whammy!

Hit Song..
Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

Solid - thanks for the feedback. We didn't do much mastering/mixing work with the track because we ran out of cash haha.

It leaves a little to be desired, but i think the quality is pretty pro overall.

I agree about the drums and low-end, but we were getting distortion so we had to thin it out or rerecord (which was not an option). The acoustic is a little loud, but we're trying to make it more of a component of the song rather than a backing instrument you know? So its a little more prominent by design.

Here are the lyrics:

It’s bigger than me
Bigger than the world inside your hand
It takes you past the broken faces
Of forgotten storylands
You’re somewhere in between
Just another supernova making history it seems

Take care, you know
It’s never what it seems
It’s never been about you
Or the things that you believe
Cause the days will pass you by
Make another supernova crashing colors in the sky

And oh my girl
I’ve seen the world
We’ve made it through this far
Lights flash
We fight another day
And we find out who we are

Another burned and broken star

Maybe (you like country)
Maybe rock & roll
You know i don’t care
As long as it’s got soul
Cause the days will pass you by
Make another supernova crashing colors in the sky

And oh my girl
I’ve seen the world
We’ve made it through this far
Lights flash
We fight another day
And we find out who we are

Another burned and broken star

And oh my girl
I’ve seen the world
We’ve made it through this far
Lights flash
We fight another day
We find out who we are

I hear ya, drums are a bitch to mic, honestly i have never gotten a decent sound from a full set of drums. The best results i ever got were with brushes and some sm57's.

Is there bass in the mix? i couldn't hear it and im wearing my mixing cans but it also could be the mp3 format. You can still mix some direct in bass lines or use a pod (which do not sound bad at all). You just need something to thicken the mix.

I like the lyrics, they look good.

i'm pretty sure its just the mp3 format. the bass response in the AACs is even 100x better - in the .aiff files it sounds money.

we spent a lot of work on the drums, though - its too bad they don't sound as great as we'd hoped. we used sm57s on the snare top and bottom, seinheisser clips for the toms, an akg kick mic, a pair of rodes condensers overhead, and a sure ksm 109 for the hi-hat.

i think with some mixing/mastering it could sound great, but like i said we ran out of cash. we may do that before we run the second printing of the album (we only ordered 500 of them) if we sell them all before the end of the school year - gonna be tough.

Awesome. It gets two wrinkly thumbs up.

The album is now up on iTunes too, in case you wanted to support some unsigned music (wink wink) - http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSt ... 0&s=143441

Your sound is somewhere between Audio Adrenaline and Zack Hexum.

I like the songs, I think they're good. I'm waiting for something in your sound to set you apart, to make you worth listening to more than whatever else is out. That element, possibly the most important, is there yet. On the other hand, if you've only been together for three months, I'd say you're off to a very precocious start. Listen to more music, maybe? I'm being presumptious, but the best writers read everything within reach or sight, and the beset songwriters listen to everything that makes noise.
Stay with me, safe and ignorant.

thanks.

i know we're kind of down the same vein as our predecessors. however, the fact that the music is "familiar" is working a bit to our advantage.

its causing people to actually stop and listen and its kind of aurally pleasing (i hope), and the messages in the lyrics and the ideology aren't too abstract - this creates a great template for musical expression.

also, we have a unique sound, if only because no one is successfully doing what we are currently. the funky acoustic, though it may be reminiscent of many people, is out of place in the majority of modern rock. our lead player has a pretty unique tone and our rhythm section is barebones and jazz-influenced.

so, though you're definitely right that we need to expand our influences (who doesn't), i'm hoping that we'll be able to continue to write music that hones our unique strengths as a band.
