How to play notes with muted strings in between

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

How to play notes with muted strings in between

Unread post by myonlybliss » Tue Dec 30, 2003 10:06 pm

Like for instance in "Lie in our Graves" or the chorus to "The Stone" or especially in "Say Goodbye". I have found no lessons teaching how to play a note on one string, then mute the next two, the play a note on the next string then mute the next ect.............. all in one chord!!!

And by the way---what advantage does this give over playing the chord in another fashion--I mean, I am assuming that these notes seperated by muted strings are part of some chord like say C#m7, so why not just play the usual version of C#m7 ect....???

You just have to let certain fingers that are pressing down strings lay across stings that are to be muted so they dont ring out, make sense? If you need more help just ask and we'll go more in depth.

just when you fret the bass note, lay that finger down to just touch the muted strings...its pretty simple

God I hope your kidding, its really not that hard, once you get down his muting technique its really easy and it transfers over to all songs. Youll wonder why it was so hard afer youve got it and youll use it a lot. Let me know if you need more explaning then what I wrote earlier.

Actually I'm glad myonlybliss brought up string muting. I have been playing around with it and having some difficulty, so if jsgksu could go into more detail it'd be much appreciated.

ill try to help explain...

first just rest a finger against any string, dont push down. youll notice how the string doesnt ring.. thats the general idea.

lets take this: (10)x7(10)xx

for the high e and B its easy, just dont play those strings.

for the A string, you use the finger thats on the 10th fret of the low E to mute it. just rest part of your finger on the string while still pushing down on the low E string.

hope that helps.

Well ok, say youre learning how to play grey street, it uses the same chord formation all over the guitar at different places in the verse, heres an example of a chord:

Code: Select all

E:--
B:--
G:--7
D:--x
A:--x
E:--7
Theres two ways to finger this chord, with your pointer and middle finger, or ring and index, if you want to play it the way Dave does. If you were to play the 7 on the low E with your index and the 7 on the G with your middle, you would put the tip of the index on the E and lay it across the fret board so it mutes all the strings, then put your middle on the G. No if you strum all the strings only the E and G string should ring out. Now take that concept and apply it to other "Dave chords" so that the ones you want ring out and the ones you dont want are muted by one or more of your fretting fingers laying across the strings. All you have to do is make sure you dont do it in a spot that mutes strings that need to be played, usually by muting with a finger thats closer to the headstock then the body of the guitar. Thats probably a really confusing post, it it helps or needs clearing up let me know. Its 3 am and thats all I can come up with right now.

Actually I once impressed a few people I know when I was changing my strings and jammed with just those two for a while.

Hmm, yeah I am glad this came up as well. I always have trouble with this. Most of the time even when I can mute the two strings inbetween I don't get all that great of a sound out of the other two strings. It doesn't end up sounding good at all. Is that the way it is supposed to sound or is it supposed to sound better when you mute the two stings??

Some times I will let the D string ring which makes it sound fuller but not always right for every song.

When you hold a chord another good thing is to hit each string one at a time to see where you need to mute better...

Yea, this is tough, but it just takes awhile to get.
But when you get it, it sounds great.
