Strumming single notes (One Sweet World)

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Strumming single notes (One Sweet World)

Unread post by redpoint » Sun Jul 08, 2007 5:27 pm

So I read the lesson page where it says Dave has the ability to hit single nots while strumming.

So then on the verse riff for One Sweet World, are you basically muting the other 5 strings while you strum?

Does that mean you are selectively changing the pressure just slightly depending on what you want to hit?

You should hit each note separately. (Shouldnt take any muting if your using picking the notes correctly)

But for other songs, try different positions for your fingers and see what works and what doesnt. You will eventually get good at muting, it just takes practice.

To answer your first question, no, you're not strumming every other string. What it means is that he is both accurate and good at muting. You can strum and only hit one note at a time if you have control over your strumming and fretting hand simultaneously. It's almost like a bouncing motion, from one note to the next, you can keep your rhythm better (imo) by strumming and hitting the 4 notes you're referring to one at a time with a down stroke and keeping your wrist "bouncing" from note to note.

If that doesn't make any sense, sorry but thats how I always explain it when I show someone how I do it. And I'd make a video but I don't have a camera.

Random movie quote to make you seem hip and "with it": There are five different types of chairs in this hotel room.

It's all in the left hand. You have to mute the strings with you fingers you aren't using. It definitely takes some practice, but it's really cool once you have it down. It's a great skill to have. I made a video a while back, you can find it here

try using your thumb to mute the lower strings while you play the higher ones (for warehouse)... it works for me.
