What pickups Dave Uses at his Martin DM3MD and the Taylos?

Just to answer the question, the Fishman go north of $100, I think close to $150 in some places. I don't think the Fishman are really that bad, but they aren't anything amazing either.

The ES in the Taylor guitars has a lot of good reviews, and was actually voted Best Acoustic Pick-Up last year I think, I'm not too sure, but it's quite good. Don't be afraid to explore some of your options as far as pick-ups go, since that is vital to your plugged in sound.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with being interested in what Dave uses. He's a pro and has a lot of experience a lot of others don't have. He knows what sounds good or not and buying something he uses probably means it's not a piece of shit.

Carter plays a Yamaha Recording Custom set... if I had the money I'd buy it. It sounds amazing, and just because he plays it doesn't mean it would make me a poser.

dave probably has no clue (or very little) what goes into his amplification scheme. He has guitar tech's and sound engineers that do the technicals for him. On tour he doesn't even change strings. He plays the music, thats it.

For that matter, there is a lot more in the pipeline than just the pickup and the speakers. There are reverbboxes, modulators, mixers....the point is that the pick-up is only partially of what you're going to hear at a concert. In contrast, whatever you hear on studio albums was likely recorded through a mic, not a pick-up.


This means that if you had Dave's exact guitar and exact pickup, you will still not get that tone. Perhaps if you specify what tone you are looking for, and under what conditions you plan to use it, someone can point you towards what you need.

Agreed, even though the benoroya hall dvd is sweet and good quality, i hate his guitar sound in it. That taylor sounds very tinny and weak on its own. I am glad to see that he is using his martins again at acoustic shows, they sound so much better in that type of setting.
