A Really Meaningful Instrumental ***Please Listen***

Unread post by Kahn » Mon Jun 18, 2007 2:37 pm

So... I don't usually post my stuff, but this is really special. Its an instrumental by Michael Houser, the late guitarist and co-founder of Widespread Panic. He died in 2002 of pancreatic cancer and played with the band literally until he couldn't hold himself up anymore and was hospitalized where he passed away.

Anyway, he is one of my biggest inspirations so I decided to record this song he wrote. He never played it with Panic, but it was released after his death on an album full of solo acoustic work like this. Really somber stuff.

On a side note, around this time, my Mother's Father had recently passed and his wife (my grandmother) was getting old and we could tell something was changing. Anyway, my Mom went to Iran to be with her in what would be her last months and she met a blind man in one of the bazaars that hand-made Dombaks (similar to the Djembe). Before she left the country, she picked up the one this man had made for me as a present. It has elaborate carvings and burnt in designs, a real piece of art and it sounds superb!

Basically I have been getting pretty good on the Dombak and thought I would record this song and incorporate my own drum playing. So here it is, Michael Houser's "Barbette's Song" (after his wife Barbette). I did one take of the song with 2 takes for percussion and another take for slide guitar. I hope you guys enjoy listening to it as much as I did recording it. It really brought back a lot of memories and made me realize how important family really is, even if it is just a song :D

Really cool sound. Laid back guitar and the shaker, nice! The dombak seems a little loud in the mix most of the time, though, but it's not a huge problem. Love the slide! Good stuff man. I enjoyed it.

You thought it was loud? Hmmm OK I'll turn it down a little.

Really nice job Kahn. The guitar playing is very clean and smooth, and I think the dombak playing accents it nicely (It isn't too loud, IMO). Good work my friend

Love the David Byrne Av...That's one of my favorite concert DVD's

Very nice recording, good work on the drums, I like how the shaker and the drums are panned to each ear. I have no problems with the levels, they seem about right. Maybe turn the guitar up a little cause it seems a bit distant, but that almost works for this song.

It's beautiful really.

My only suggestion would be to add a little bit of effects to the slide part to fatten it up. Some reverb and a little delay would do nicely.

Good Job.

awesome, great recording.

I really like the drum and think it fits in well. The shaker was a little off on the first few beats, maybe try to fade that in to make it sound smoother. I think the primary guitar sounds great and the slide needs to be turned up a tad. Overall great work, thanks for posting.

^^werd

great job with this. i did think the drums were a bit loud though. i'd turn them down about 50% and then add a slight reverb to them to give them a 'distant' sound and make them sound in the background.

I thought it was very good, the shaker and drum fill it out quite nicely, and the guitar work was nice and clean. With regards to the drum, I agree with Blake, it's just a tad loud, but more than that, it has a fairly abrasive sound, like, they're right up front in the mix, a touch of reverb would soften it up a bit, and it'd blend a little better with the guitar. But other than that, it was very good.
