So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

I realize that playing the songs like Dave does is great practice, especially when learning chord transitions...but is it completely necessary for me to play a song like "Christmas Song" using the chord transitions?

Chord Transitions

Its mentioned as a note that Dave fingers for a G A Bm in "Christmas Song"...Is it really necessary to use those chords considering you're only plucking at most 2 strings?

I used to play it this way, plucking with thumb and index and using the same fingering as Grey Street, Tripping Billies, Lover Lay Down, etc.

E:-----------------
B:-----------------
G:--4---6---7---7-
D:-----------------
A:-----------------
E:--3---5---7---7-

is this what you mean? I different, perhaps easier way?

This is how I play it now:

E:-----------------
B:--0---2---3---3-- <---2on2(4on3)
G:-----------------
D:-----------------
A:------0---2---2-- <---1
E:--3-------------- <---3

I just edited JKanter's fingerings a touch.

peace,
Ken

it really depends on why youre learning to play a specific song. if youve been playing guitar for a long while and you just wanna put an extra song on your list, then dont bother chording the stuff if youre not gonna play the notes. then again, if youre just starting out then the chord changes might be good exercise, or if you want to jam on the song a lot you might wanna learn the full chords as well, just to add your own picking style to it.
hope that helps...

This is the usual Bm chord:

E:---2---
B:---3---
G:---4---
D:---4---
A:---2---
E:---X---

This is another one ala #41

E:---X---
B:---X----
G:---7---
D:---4---
A:---5---
E:---7----

Gravedigger's fingering is pretty much what I use, slightly off from jkanter's.

No...not at all. Most of the time I don't play it with the full chord formations at all. I know it seems like a chore but i was just stating that sometimes Dave plays it like that. This site is supposed to give the most information for DMB Guitar playing ever......so techincally I put i tup there because he doesn it sometimes. You don't have to play it like that. Check out the video's....I beleive I dind't play it liek taht whole time.....eklme know...poeace
