how do you finger this?
how do you finger this?
You would you finger a chord such as 5x5555? I was using my thumb for the 6 string and barred the other notes with my 3rd finger, because I thought that felt easier than using my 1st finger, but on John Mayer's My Stupid Mouth there is a slightly different chord, a 3x3335 chord, which would be hard to finger using my third finger, and it seems like it's necessary on that song to bar the 2-4 strings with your first or second finger, and finger the 1 string with your pinky. I'm just wondering if there's any general consensus on how to finger either of those chords, or if it's more like whichever way you choose.

- Random movie quote to make you seem hip and "with it": A little bit of column A and a little bit of column B...

Use your thumb for the low E, bar the rest with your first finger, then use your pinky for the high E
EDIT: btw, this how John plays it

for the first chord I'd go
5-(ring)
5-(ring)
5-(ring)
5-ring (barred over the rest of the strings)
x-(middle hanging over to mute)
5-middle
for the other I'd fret it like this:
5-pinky
3-ring
3-ring
3-ring barred (barred over the D, G and B strings)
x-(index hanging over to mute)
3-index
that last one's really a stretch

Only unless I have to. I've been playing a lot of jazz lately, and the 'barring' in the first chord is pretty common in jazz (in minor 7th chord and 9th chords, etc.). I can't see how it would be at all convenient to use your thumb for the bass in the second chord, for me at least.geo3217 wrote:wow... you must have fingers of steel. What, do you not like using your thumb?
