Ants Question...

Alright, I tried searching but I couldn't find the answer to my question.

I've been trying to get Ants down for a while now and I can't quite figure out how to get it right. When I play the D and G chords, I can't figure out exactly how Dave mutes the strings before he goes into the 4/5 slide. When I try to mute the strings with my strumming hand I still get alot of notes that shouldn't be there, and I've tried muting with my fret hand with the same results.

I know the most common answer on this forum is "keep practicing", and believe me I am, I was just wondering if there's a technique I'm missing. This one's been bugging me for a while now.

I hit the D chord once then place my strumming hand over the strings as I move to the 4/5 slide
so my strumming pattern goes like this D (on the Dchord) and then UDU on the muted strings which leads to a downstroke on the 4/5 slide, try it slow

the strum pattern is also the exact same for the G chord and the second set of 4/5 slides

I prefer to use my fretting hand and i kind of go in a circular motion. when im muting, i swipe beyond the 4/5 frets and then come back up 4/5 to complete the circle. Its kind of wierd, but it ensures i mute all the strings

replace strumming hand with fretting hand, i'm surprised i didn't catch that

I do the same thing that TSilk does. Strum the chords, mute the strings with my strumming hand, then go into the slide. You could mute it with your fret hand, but if you're new to the song its probably going to be more difficult to go into the slide after.

Best advice is what Silk said, do it slow, over and over until it pretty much just becomes a finger exercise. Just practice.
