The Dave into his song thing is exactly my bust on Timmy. He doesn't get into anything but his own playing...at least that's how it appears.
I went to a Masterclass at Peabody once and this double bass virtuoso called out this student. He said "You're bathing yourself in your playing. It's not about you. It's about the music".
That's what I'm saying.
