Yeah its cool...not hard to tune it but man the tension on the low E is crazy......
Like you said it sounds a hell of a lot better when its in GGDGBD .....

Tune your guitar to open E then use the capo on the third fret I believe. Less stress on your neck this way.
Tighten the 5th string so that it matches the pitch of the 6th string at the 7th fret (B) Tighten the 4th string so that it matches the pitch of the open 6th string (E) Tighten the 3rd string a little so that it matches the pitch of the 4th string at the 4th fret (G#)
Use capo to achieve different open chords = easy!

I'd think the GGDGBD would have less tension than open E. Maybe if you wanted to tune to open D and the capo the 5th fret, I guess. Stone probably uses a lighter string for tuning it up. Doing that with my mediums would scare me, but I think the tension would be sort of balanced out because you're tuning the A and high E down.
