Does anyone else have a hard time taking cover songs serious

Unread post by Jc » Thu Mar 04, 2004 5:24 am

???????????? I know I should learn how to properly play the cover song cause it will be useful at live shows... However I really feel goofy singing someone else's work. I basically learn the chord structure where I can play it ok, then instead of getting myself to rhythmically get it down with my voice I end up feeling goofy for doing the cover song and do stuff like the "Matchbox Mayer" It's so hard for me to take cover songs seriously :( It's a necessary evil I know, bah. Incidentally, I just started playing the song "My Stupid Mouth" which is actually a good John Mayer tune. I'm singing the verse just fine and it gets to the chorus and it dawns on me "I'm singing a John Mayer song, oh man..." then I started doing this like reggae Jason Mraz thing for the verse. I can't get into the mindset to want to do cover songs. BLECH

Am I the only one who feels odd about the songs not being my own? I know when I tried all the way through on a cover, I listened to the original version with the artist that wrote it and I just felt mine was cheap in comparison. Meh.

A song is all about emotion and feeling what the song is about. You have to get into it, and let it get into you.

I suggest you only do a couple of covers and really make the songs your own. I hate doing covers that feel sotra "cheap" as well, so I just pick out a song with really good lyrics, and a simple chord structure and I really change it and make it my own.

it's definitely all in your head...I mean yea, it's not your song, but the people listening could care less...you would be the only having attention on the fact that it's not your song...anyone else who has a problem with that...well, that's there problem. But if you play it well, 99% of the people will appreciate it. I guarantee you...there wouldn't be half the artists out there today(most likely more) if it werent for others covering others' songs. Everybody freakin does it. I do understand how you feel, but it's something that should and can easily be gotten over.

as repeated by everyone here, make it your own. dave's watchtower is different from the original dylan's. jeff buckley is a great example of an artist who had very little original material but made all his covers sound like that of his own.

To know where your going you have to know where you've been. Thats why covers are important.
