adding pickups to an acoustic

Unread post by 1eyed_jack » Thu Feb 12, 2004 10:25 pm

hello everyone. Right now I play an acoustic Seagull M6 Cedar, and I want to put pickups in it. The place I got it says that they can do it for $200 and the pickups would be fishman (which i here is good). Obviously I wouldnt have the tone knobs, it would just be strictly inside work. Has anyone ever done this before, and how has it turned out. Will it pretty much be just like my guitar before except now i can plug it in? Sorry if these are dumb questions, but i'm not very knowlodgable in this field[. thanks for your help.

Random movie quote to make you seem hip and "with it": I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

$200 for a basic fishman? interesting... you can probably get better. check out LR Baggs... i have one on my electric (dont feel like explaining all the capabilities of it right now) but its perfect.

i think that fishman is all they work with. The place is relativley small and they are very nice people. I'd trust them over one of those giant stores anyday

Fishman is good stuff. So, after you have it done it would be just like you have the same guitar, just now it can be plugged in and amplified. It's really non-invasive and unnoticable.

I've never found it to be a problem. If I'm plugging into something it generally has tone knobs/eq knobs for me to mess with if I need it (such as an amp or a mixing board). Usually though, the sound I hear coming out of my guitars is pretty much what gets amplified, so if you're happy with the tonal balance of your guitar now, you should be fine. The only time I use anything like tone knobs is when I'm runnign through an amp that "colors" the sound. Then I'll jsut eq a bit and it's all good!

thanks for the advice!
Also, my guitar teacher said that the removable pickups are better, i guess you just put it over the sound hole or sometihng.
does anyone have these, or know which is better to have. thanks again in advance

I've used both.... I prefer the installed pickup. But the removable ones do just fine as well. It all depends what you want to use it for. I hated having a wire sticking out of the middle of my guitar, plus I felt that the installed pickup gave a truer sound to my guitar. Maybe you should test a removable pickup with your guitar at Guitar Center, then if you like the sound, get it. If not, keep looking.
